Dear Father Busch:

I am slow in thanking you for your recent letter and in making corrections on the proofs sent to me from the printer. Owing to my absence from Washington, I regret that I was not able to return the proofs earlier.

The appearance of a good bibliography on Japan necessitated a few minor changes. A note should be printed at the end of the article, and I shall rely on your help in final proof-reading.

Dr. Loewenthal and I have read the proofs and both of us wish to congratulate you for having chosen such a good printer. His work is most satisfactory.

As soon as the reprints are ready, will you send a few copies to libraries in Japan for me in addition to those I mentioned in my previous letter. There is no need to send copies to Communist China at this time.

With many thanks,

Yours sincerely,

C. K. Jen, 10203 Lariston, Silver Spring, Md.

January 19, 1961

Dear Dr. Yuan,

Thank you and Mrs. Yuan for the box of delicious cookies you sent us. We are enjoying them every day. It was very thoughtful of you to remember us.

Our Library is getting along. Prof. Rudolph has been back. He bought some books for us from Formosa, Hong Kong and Japan.

The copy of your excellent bibliography, the China in Western Literature, in the Reference Room here is in great demand and many scholars find it most valuable.

Many people who are doing research work on China have asked me many times whether you are working on the periodical articles in Western languages. Since it involves such a tremendous amount of work, maybe you could ask some assistants, say 10 or 12 to work on different subjects under your direction. This way this monumental work may be finished in a comparatively short time. I am sure many people would be interested in seeing it done.

Are you going to attend the AAS annual meeting in Chicago this year? I understand S. Y. Chen is going but we are not going.

Again, with many thanks & best regards.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr. Fugh:

In the long history of Yenching, some honorary degrees were conferred upon Chinese scholars. As Dr. Stuart has a wonderful memory, I wonder if you could ask him the names of those who have been thus honored.

I seem to remember that Dr. C. T. Wang was one of those receiving an honorary degree from Yenching, but I may be wrong. Dr. Edwards in his history of Yenching, did not mention any honorary degrees.

I trust that Dr. Stuart is keeping well despite this cold weather. Kindly give him my best wishes for his health.

Dear Dr. Yuan:

I am glad to receive your letter of February 16, 1961 together with the photostat material enclosed therein. I find it most interesting to refresh my memory after more than 30 years. You must have spent much time looking it up.

In the past few months, I have been looking over some source material relating to my part in the work of the League of Nations. It is time consuming but serves to recall many things which I have entirely forgotten.

You are very kind in continuing your effort to search material of the kind you have just sent me. I can understand the slowness of the Photoduplication Service of the Library of Congress in filling orders, as I think the amount of work demanded of it must be tremendous.

With warm personal regards and best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

April 2, 1961

Dr. Yuan:

Recently reminiscing about my first years of public service in the President's Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Peking, I tried to make some notes about the several important negotiations in which I was specially instructed to take a part. But I am unable to find some relevant documents or data here.

I. In 1912 or 1913, the Russian minister suddenly one day presented Mr. M. T. Liang, Foreign Minister, with a document outlining three demands concerning Mongolia. The minister was so indignant not only at the nature of the demands but also at the high-handed manner and the threatening language of the minister that as a protest he resigned his post. Could you find the date of this interview and the text of the demands? The memorandum was kept secret at the time but was published later.

II. In 1921-4 Great Britain kept pressing China to settle the Tibetan question. Sir John Jordan, considering himself a personal friend of President Yuan Shih-kai, preferred to negotiate directly with him. As Secretary to the President as well as of the Foreign Ministry, I was designated by him to interpret and take notes of their interviews and frequently sent by him to interview Sir John at his Legation. As an outcome, Mr. Chen Yi, a veteran diplomat versed in the Tibetan question, was sent to Shimla to conclude a definitive agreement defining the boundaries between China and Tibet. He spent several months there. He referred back and forth to certain difficult points of delimitation, but one day he suddenly initialed a draft agreement without authorization. President Yuan was so displeased and angry that he dismissed Chen to the protest of the British Government. Could you find out the date of this incident and the text of the initialed document? Recently the Indian Government again referred to this alleged agreement as one of the grounds in support of India's case in the negotiations with Communist China concerning her claims in the dispute over the boundary with Tibet.

III. The notorious 21 demands were presented by Japan in January, 1915. I was designated as one of the members of the Chinese delegation headed by the Foreign Minister, but on objection by the Japanese Minister I was not appointed to it actually. Instead, I was directed to work on the question closely with our delegation and to take charge of keeping in contact with the friendly Legations in Peking and with publicity abroad. Consequently, I had numerous interviews particularly with Dr. Paul S. Reinsch, U. S. Minister, both for informing Washington and getting its views. The most pernicious 5th Group was in due course published abroad, and this publicity aroused a wave of protest from Tokyo and indignation from the friendly Powers in our favor. On May 4, 1915 Japan presented to China the now well-known ultimatum for acceptance of the negotiated terms within 48 hours. I was asked to study its contents and draft a reply. This I did in the German Hospital where I had been confined for influenza with a high temperature. The draft was readily approved by the Government, though the paragraph relating to the Fifth Group was softened on the suggestion of the Japanese educated secretary of our Delegation after seeing the Japanese Minister. I was convinced of the need of an official statement by the Government to explain the course of the negotiations and its reasons for accepting the ultimatum to the people of China and to the world at large. This I did by dictating all night a text to William H. Donald and it was typed by his assistant Mr. Pratt, both representing at the time The Times of London. Could you find a copy of the ultimatum and China's reply for me? I think they were both inserted in the Memorandum on the Twenty-One Demands submitted to the Versailles Peace Conference in 1919 as one of China's Desiderata.

IV. During the period of May, 1912-August, 1915 when I was first Secretary and then Counsellor of the Foreign Ministry, the Foreign Minister was changed four or five times either as result of Cabinet reshuffle or due to resignation. Could you find the names of these Foreign Ministers and the dates of their respective appointment? I would also appreciate a list of the Cabinet changes with their composition and the dates of such changes.

I am afraid I have raised too many questions. There is, however, no hurry to get the material. If you would be good enough to make some research in your spare moments, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanking you in advance and with cordial personal regards,

Yours sincerely,

V. K. Wellington Koo

D化学系),名Sheldon Kaufman(全名可在LC目录一查),现在Princeton教书,章则在Brookhaven(?)National Lab. Univ. of Chicago Studies of Library Science丛书之内,并允加资助也。

For some time, I have been collecting data for a Guide to doctoral dissertations by Chinese students in Great Britain. Over 400 dissertations have been cited and the Guide could be published in the autumn. As I am in need of support, I wonder if you think it to ask for a small grant from the Universities'China Committee, or the China Institute in London as you see fit. I shall be grateful to have your advice and suggestions, so that it could be published as soon as the editorial work is completed. I now enclose a brief statement.

Dear Dr. Yuan:

My husband and I will be paying a very brief private visit to our friends in Washington and hope to visit the Library of Congress on Friday, 5th May, and would very much like to drop in to your office for a few minutes if this will be possible. I have written to Miss Morsch that she will call at about 10.30 a. m. and to Dr. Beal that we will be in the Orientalia section about 11 a. m. I believe you are in another division now but we will find out where you are when we arrive.

I think I wrote to you last year that we were leaving Hong Kong and planning to spend a year or two in the States. We are both at Columbia for the time being. We will give you our news when we meet, we hope next Friday.

Your kind letter and Dr. Wu's were both here when we returned. I should have given you a little more notice.

I have written to Hong Kong to ask the Registrar to send you a catalogue of the University, unfortunately I omitted to bring even one with me.

For the directory of the Sino-British Club in Hong Kong, as my husband suggested, it would be a good idea to write to Mr. James Liu. He is leaving for Honolulu in late July or August, but you could suggest he passes your letter on to the Secretary, who it is this year I don't know. His name, by the way, is刘若愚(君智).

The University of Chicago Press三项及Foreign Affairs之收据,均已寄到,费神至感!

Dear Dr. Yuan:

Thank you for your kind note of the 24th, and also for your thoughtfulness in securing an invitation for me for the preview of the Chinese Art exhibition. I managed to spend two hours at the opening of Friday afternoon, and was happy to renew my acquaintances with some of the masterpieces as well as my T'ai-chung friends, Messrs. Li, T'an and Na. I was sorry not to have found you there.

I have enclosed a list of my publications along with a reprint of one of my recent articles. I am afraid that this is the best I can do now, as I am all out of other reprints. I am going to be away from Princeton for a year on a Guggenheim fellowship, but Dr. Cheng Te-k'un of Cambridge University will be here as a visiting professor to take care of the special Chinese Art and Archaeology Program for me. I am sure that you are acquainted with his three recent volumes on Chinese archaeology(Archaeological Studies in Szechwan, Cambridge 1957; Prehistoric China, Cambridge 1959; Shang China, Cambridge 1960). You can reach him through this department after the first of September.

As I have to finish a manuscript before leaving for Japan and Hong Kong sometime in late September, we are going to be in Princeton all summer. My wife and I would be delighted if you and Mrs. Yuan could arrange to visit Princeton for a weekend and stay with us. It would give me great pleasure to show you our museum collection and teaching facilities in the Chinese art field.

Dear Dr. Koo:

I must apologize for the delay in answering your recent letter. There is only one complete set of the Chinese Government Gazette in the Library of Congress which was sent to the bindery and detained there for several months. Last week when it was bound, I looked for the information about the cabinet changes taking place between 1912 and 1915. The enclosed list indicates only a few members of each cabinet. If you wish to have a full list, please let me know.

It was Krupenskii who presented to Mr. M. T. Liang with a document outlining three demands: There is a full account of these negotiations in a Russian document I wanted someone to translate it for you, but everyone seemed to have been fully occupied these days, so I am enclosing an excerpt from Peter. S. H. Tang's book which is well documented.

Other documents you wanted are being reproduced and I shall mail them to you as soon as ready.(Such as the Tibetan question and the 21 demands)

In this connection, I may add that the National Archives in Washington has reproduced on microfilms the Department of State relating to China, 1910-1929. I have already ordered a set for the Academia Historica at Taipei and if you need them, you may suggest to the Librarian of the Peace Palace at the Hague to buy a complete set.

The first Chinese who received the Ph. D. degree from Columbia was the late Dr. Yen Chin-yung whose dissertation was entitled: Rights of citizens and persons under the Fourteenth Amendment submitted in 1905. If you happen to know his Chinese name, will you let me know?

Dear Mr. Morkill:

I have been informed by Dr. W. Simon that the Experts Committee of the U. C. C. has recommended the award of a grant of £180.0.0. to enable me to compile a Guide of Doctoral Dissertations by Chinese Students in Britain. It is a great honour indeed to have received such a grant and I shall be most grateful if you could convey my heart-felt thanks to members of the U. C. C.

It is my hope that the Guide will not only serve as a permanent record of the scholastic achievements of Chinese students in British universities, but it would also reflect the excellent training which the learned faculties in these universities have given to them.

As soon as payment for this grant can be arranged, please send your cheque to the Barclay's Bank, Marylebone Branch, London, W. 1. for the credit of my account there. A letter to this Bank is enclosed for your convenience.

It was very sweet of you to send me a copy of your article published on the occasion of the opening of your new Public Library in Kensington. Your remark about the Peking Library was especially appreciated.

Dear Professor Simon:

I am deeply grateful to you for your letter of 7th June and for your recommendation for a grant from U. C. C. Will you convey my hearty thanks to other members of the Experts Committee? I feel sure that without the recommendations of your Committee, no favorable action could have been taken.

In accordance with your suggestion, I have written to Mr. Morkill, suggesting that when the amount of the grant is available, a cheque should be sent to the Barclay's Bank for the credit of my account there.

I wrote to you about the Exhibition of Chinese Art Treasures held in Washington. An illustrated catalogue has just been issued, a copy of which I take pleasure in presenting to you. It is being mailed by surface mail, and I hope you and Mrs. Simon would enjoy it.

I presume that Harry has left for Melbourne and will enjoy the work of organizing a new department there. To-day I had a visit from Miss Bishop, Librarian of the Oriental Collection at Canberra which is to be one of the important centers for Asiatic studies in that part of the world. She is making the necessary contact here and will reap a good harvest out of this trip. She is keenly interested in enlarging the Oriental Collection at Canberra and her efforts will be successful, I am sure.

June 18, 1961

Dear Dr. Yuan,

My husband & I regret so much that the short duration of our stay in Washington did not permit us to meet. We have the happiest recollections of our visit to the Library of Congress last year, and of seeing you. My husband is now engaged in writing a book on the Ko Ku Yao Lun, which may well sum to perhaps three octavo or two great volumes. For such an undertaking he will naturally have to have all the information on the subject that may be available.

Your world-wide & almost fabulous knowledge of Chinese bibliography, prompts him to ask you what may be a very simple question. He wishes to know the year in which Wang Tso, the compiler of the augmented version of the Chinese work in question, died.

We will be most grateful to you for this piece of information, which will of course be duly acknowledged.

Metaphor, Myth, Ritual and the People's Commune请购两部,收据分开两张,原通知附奉。

The Conferences at Cairo and Teheran 1943,尚有以前所发表关于波茨坦会议之文件二卷,及雅尔达会议之文件一卷,均请设法代购。

Dear Dr. Yuan:

I wish to acknowledge receipt of your letter of June 7, 1961 with enclosures and more recently a roll of photostats relating to the question of Outer Mongolia. They are most useful and just what I needed.

As regards the State Department microfilm records relating to China, I shall keep your suggestion in mind and try to approach the Peace Palace Librarian with it, though I know the funds for new documents and books are also rather limited.

I recall that Dr. Yen Chin-yung's Chinese name is严锦荣,though I am not sure. I believe his Chinese name may be found along with his English name in his dissertation. In any case the美洲日报of New York must have carried a report of his receiving the Ph. D. in June 1905.

Enclosed please find a check for $100 to meet the incidental expenses of typing and making photostats, as I am certain that a similar sum sent some time ago must have been exhausted long ago.

With many thanks for your help and hoping I can continue to reply on your valuable assistance,

June 26, 1961

Dear Lady David:

Since receiving your recent letter, I have done some research concerning the year of death of Wang Tso who Sir Percival is especially interested. The first reference book I consulted is the Index to 89 Ming dynasty biographies . As he was not listed there, it indicates that his biography was not recorded in any of the 89 biographies. I then looked up the Gazetteer of Chi-an of Kiangsi province which is his native city. Failing to find him there, I searched him in the Index to the biographies of the Twenty-Five Histories which as you know is also a useful tool. Although there are many references of persons of the same name, this particular person was not listed. All we do know is that he was also known by his courtesy name K'ung-ts'ai as noted in the preface to the Ko Ku Yao-lun.

I am particularly delighted to know that Sir Percival's monumental work on his treatise is nearing completion. Hearty congratulations! It is an important piece of research which the scholarly world has been waiting. You can well imagine how anxious I look forward to its publication.

You may be interested to know that I have been engaged in a comprehensive bibliography of Chinese art. The first part contains entirely Western literature with special emphasis on periodical articles. Hidden in unexpected places and fugitive in character, they are more important than monographs. It will take another year before the whole work is completed.

In view of the high cost of printing in America and in view of its limited interest, I shall arrange to publish the bibliography in several arts, such as Pottery and Porcelain, Painting, Bronzes, Sculpture, Architecture and Landscape Gardening, Minor Arts, etc. etc.

When you return to London, I hope you would be so kind as to send me a complete list of articles which you and Sir Percival have written on Chinese art. I have already included a number of these articles, but I should like to have a complete listing of articles as well as monographs.

Please convey our best wishes to Sir Percival for his health and scholarly achievements.

Sincerely,

University of Chicago Studies in Library Science之一。 Written on Bamboo and Silk: the beginnings of Chinese books and inscriptions,虽内容不限竹帛,但用竹帛作为中国书史中之一代表时期,想尚不致太谬。

Dear Dr. Yuan:

For some time I have been considering the idea of publishing a Chinese edition of my memoirs and I am glad to know that you recommend it, too. One difficulty, I am afraid, is the fact that the documentary material for it is so scattered that the task of gathering it in a fairly comprehensive manner may take much time and work. But no one is more competent and experienced than yourself. It would be an excellent idea if you could start to collect the essential material. Only the other day in connection with the Columbia University Chinese oral history project I came across many documents in the China Year Book of 1923-24 regarding the Lin Cheng incident, the Weihaiwei case, the Gold Franc question and the Sino-Soviet negotiations for an agreement. They are of course all in English and some of the translations done by the editors are rather poor. But they give a hint as to where the original texts might be found.

I have often heard from mutual friends of Mr. L. S. Liu as a scholar good in both English and Chinese, and he will certainly be competent and undertake the task as you have suggested. Since I am coming to Washington in mid-September to attend the annual meeting of the China Foundation, I hope to have an opportunity of seeing you and discussing the idea together and the possible arrangement for the execution. I should like very much to be guided by what you consider necessary or advisable, before I reach any decision about it.

Looking forward to seeing you soon and with warm personal regards,

Under separate cover, I am sending you a copy of the CURRENT PERIODICALS IN THE MISSIONARY RESEARCH LIBRARY which I compiled not long ago. I hope it will be of some interest to you.

By the way I wish to tell you that I am leaving for Ithaca in two weeks. I shall be working as Chinese Bibliographer-Cataloguer at Cornell University Library with the responsibility to build up its Chinese collections. My new address after Sept. 24 will be:-

As you will know, I have been engaged in the production of a History of Chinese Art and Letters for some time past. In addition to my own work(which will not be inconsiderable, since it will be my own book)this will include a good many special articles on special subjects by a number of specialists, who will total more than a score. Amongst them you will find many familiar names, I am sure.

In the U. S. there will be at least I hope Mr. George Yeh, Li Ling-tsan, Archibald Wenley, and Aschwin Lippe. I would like very much to include you. The subject may be of your own choosing(biographical I would prefer),the book on which the great part of the work will hang being the Ko ku yao lun. I have done the translation and the interpretation of the difficult technical jargon of both the 1388 3 chapters edition & the 1462(not 1459, as originally believed)editions, a number of special articles by me(done)an appreciation of a number of topics, mostly done, a title “A discussion of the Essential Criteria of Chinese Antiquities),” a Dedication(done),a Preface(done),Introduction(done)□□□□(very, very difficult I have found this)done. Your subject may be as I have said of your own choice. It may be things or subjects Chinese, Mongol, □□□□□□□□ or et cetera. The only limitations are

1.The subjects touched may not be later in date than 1485.

2.The article should be in my hands by the first week in February 1962.

I sincerely hope I may have the pleasure & privilege of welcoming you within our charmed □□□□ circle.

With our warmest greetings and with every good wish, I am

Yours very sincerely,

Percival David

P. S. I should have added the name of Dr. Wen Fong who has done an admirable article on “Copies & fakes in Chinese painting” to have said that of course every such article will appear over the contributor's name. P. D.

My dear Yuan,

Thank you very much for your letter of September 30.

I am glad and grateful to know that you have written to Professors Wu and Li on my behalf and anything from their pen that does not run absolutely counter to my views(which I think would be most unlikely)will be very welcome. But they and their contributions will not excuse you. You must contribute something of your own choice. But it be anything. The book I am doing is by no means limited in its scope to Chinese Art. It includes literature and subjects as diverse as music and architecture, paintings and calligraphy, silk and jades, ceramics and bronzes, lacquer and horn. So, I am not going to let you off-you say you are at present tied up with a bibliography of Chinese Art? Nothing, but nothing, could possibly be more welcome than that for my book. So, I shall be counting on you to be one of 36 other collaborators. You ask Lady David for a list of my publications. I have never done a book but what I have published are listed in Pope's Chinese Porcelains from the Ardebil Shrine, p. 165. Counting on your collaboration. With every good wish for us both.

Dear Sir David:

Thank you so much for your cable and your recent letters. I should like so much to comply with your request, but as I am so much tied up with other work, I do not have much energy left especially when I have to work eight hours daily for the Library of Congress.

However, in view of your significant service to the history of art, I shall compile a bibliography of Ming ceramics which you may like to include it at the end of the volume. If the entries are too many for your purpose, we could limit it to early Ming-up to 1485. Since it will be limited to books and articles in western languages, the number of Chinese characters would not be very large.

My larger work-the Bibliography of Chinese art and archaeology would not be ready until 1963. When the times for its publication, I shall, of course, seek your advice again. Perhaps your Foundation may like to sponsor it as one of your monograph series.

Dear Professor Li:

Sir Percival David, 53 Gordon Square, London, W. C. 1, has repeatedly asked me to contribute an essay on Chinese art to be included in his latest work on Chinese Art and Letters. As I am now tied up with a bibliography on Chinese art and archaeology, I suggested that you should be asked to contribute a scholarly essay. I recommended you to him in the highest terms and I think he may have written to you already.

As he is to publish his translation of the on which he has worked for many years, he is anxious that the subject of the essay may not be later in date than 1483. Also, the essay should be in his hands in February, 1962. It is my hope that you will comply with his request if you hear from him.

My bibliography on Chinese art and archaeology will not be published until the end of next year. If you could send me a list of your papers and available reprints, I shall be grateful.

Dear Dr. Yuan:

Thanks for your letter of October 14. I am very much honored by your suggesting my name to Sir Percival David as a possible contributor to his work on Chinese Art and Letters. However, I have not yet heard from him and I doubt that he will write me, since we have never met and since he has probably never heard of me. On the other hand, I have been very much tied up by the preparation of a lengthy article on Chao Meng-fu for the Artibus Asiae which I hope to finish by Christmas. That actually does not leave very much time to do another one. As a matter of fact, I have just been asked to do a short article on a painting by P'u-ming for the Oberlin Museum bulletin. All these mean that there is not much time to do anything else before February 1962.

I am very much interested in your bibliography on Chinese art and archaeology and hope that it will be completed soon. I am now offering a course called “seminar on Sung and Yuan Painting.” Right from the start, I found that I needed a good bibliography. Your book will certainly fill the need.

As far as my own publications are concerned, the list is very short. I was a student of Western art, and moved into Chinese art only in recent years. The list includes:

“Recent History of the Palace Collection,” Archives of the Chinese Art Society of America, XII, 1958, pp. 61-75.

“Rocks and Trees and the art of Ts'ao Chih-po,” Artibus Asiae, XXIII, 3/4, 1960, pp. 153-208.(This is also issued as a monograph, a prospectus of which I include herewith for your use)

I am sorry that no more reprints are available. Those for the monograph have been in such great demand from my friends and scholars that I have to disappoint many of them.

Glad to hear from you, reminding me of the pleasure of meeting you in Maryland last May. My best regards to you.

October 26, 1961

Dear Dr. Yuan:

Thank you very much indeed for your letter of October 1st. I thought that I was going to see Professor Fong of Princeton during my scheduled visit to New York last week and discuss Sir Percival David's book, but at the last moment he could not come to New York and told me over the phone that he was not certain about his contribution to it either. I am afraid I would have to hear directly from Sir Percival before I could decide whether a contribution from me would be appropriate. On the other hand, I am most interested in your bibliography on Chinese art and indeed look forward most eagerly to seeing it.

An article by me on Tung Ch'i-ch'ang will appear in Arthur Wright's fifth volume on Confucianism. My book, Tung Ch'i-ch'ang: the Man, his Times and his Landscape Painting, is scheduled to be submitted to press, I hope, sometime next summer. My other writings, all not very important but some of which have become rather well-liked, I hope to send by separate mail in a few days. Depending on the cutting off date of your bibliography, I may have a few items slightly more important to add.

On the subject of publication, I had a strange experience with the American copyright law in 1958-59 when I published my novel Wei-yang Ko(未央歌)under my pen name Lu Ch'iao(鹿桥). It was impossible to get the book printed in this country as it was 600 pages long even using the new No. 5 type, and involves perhaps the largest vocabulary since the new literary movement of 1919. The fact that I published it in Hong Kong deprived me of copyright protection in this country. Within a few months of its publication, one pirated edition appeared in Taiwan, and recently in a newspaper announcement there I read an apology from a publisher known as I-ming Book Store(一鸣书局)to my distributor the Asian Press(亚洲出版社)for this illegal act. Here I learned that actually two pirated editions had been put on the market, each under a different name(未央曲,及星月悠扬). I have been able to purchase two copies of one of these editions and shall begin to look for the other soon. Let me first present you with a copy of the authentic first edition. The mutilation of the book by the Taiwan publishers and the corners they cut can be easily discovered by comparison. However, until I can get hold of more copies, I rather treasure the souvenir copies I have been able to acquire. This anecdote, of course, has nothing to do with your compilation of bibliography, but I think it might amuse you.

Now that my second edition is about to be printed, a translation of it into English is quite likely. I wonder whether I can have at least the translation rights protected. Do we respect the copyright of books published in Hong Kong? I shall appreciate any advice from your experience.

With all best wishes,

Sincerely yours

3rd November, 1961

Dear Percy:

I am most grateful for your recent letter and for the catalogues which Lady David so kindly sent to me. Please convey to her my hearty thanks.

I wish it were possible for me to complete my Bibliography on Chinese Art and Archaeology in the time for inclusion in your monumental work. But as I am doing this work in my spare hours, I cannot complete it until the spring of 1963. Under these circumstances, may I say that my proposal to compile a bibliography on Ming ceramics is a practical one, and that it would be rather appropriate for your purpose. So, I shall get it started next month and have it ready before February 1, 1962.

The American Council of Learned Societies(345 East 46th Street, New York 17, N. Y.)has limited funds which its Committee on Grants can use in support of scholarly research(Each grant not exceeding $3,000). Last November I applied for such a grant, but my request was turned down. Now, I am going to try again, but I have to be supported by strong recommendations from art historians and leading scholars. Since your recommendation would carry considerable weight, may I ask you to be good enough to write such a letter on my behalf? In this letter you might mention the urgent need for such a bibliography felt by all art historians as well as my competence in undertaking such a task. This letter should be mailed directly to the American Council of Learned Societies on the form herewith enclosed.

The letter of recommendation should reach the Council in November, while the grant will be announced in February or March. If I could get it, I could have clerical assistance and could travel to centers to gain access to necessary material, and the work will be greatly expedited.

Thanking you once again for your support and with warm regards to Lady David,

Sincerely yours,

Tung-li

Thank you for your letter of November 3, 1961. We are, of course, all very sorry that you should have to postpone your visit. I find I am spending a useful and enjoyable time here and I am very much looking forward to going to Washington. But maybe this will have to wait until the end of this session(end of May).

I am delighted to hear that the travel grants the UCC awarded you has been useful. I have given some thought to the other question you raised in your letter. I don't think that UCC would be an institution that could acquire and distribute copies of your bibliography, but the China Society might be interested in it. I suggest that you write about this to Professor Hansford who is both on the Council of the UCC and the China Society. You will have seen from the last report of the UCC that the publication committee worked out detailed rules for application for a subsidy and I have no doubt in my mind that a publication like yours would be eminently eligible for a subsidy. But since you have apparently the intention to pay for the printing, it is difficult to see how the subsidy should come in. I am sure that Professor Hansford would be willing to take up this matter with the chairman of the publication committee.(I do not know who he is, since I resigned my chairmanship before my departure to Toronto. It is likely however, that it is Professor Pulleyblank).

If you write to Professor Hansford, he will either give advice himself or induce the chairman of the publication committee to do so, I can only repeat that my impression is that the UCC will be most glad to be of help in whatever way they can.

Hoping that you and Mrs. Yuan are well I remain, With very kind regards,

Yours sincerely

Dear Tung-li,

Thank you very much for your letter of the 3rd & the enclosures.

Of course, I shall be glad to do all I can to help you in your project.

Meanwhile, I wish to say that our work has been deferred until the spring of 1963 to enable us to include Bibliography of Chinese Art and Archaeology. There has long been an impression that is wholly fake that I am interested only in Ceramics. Nothing could be further from the truth! Looking forward to a reply in the affirmative to this request of mine.

With our warmest greetings, regards, yours sincerely.

Dear Dr. Meng:

I am writing to ask for a favor.

The Guide to Doctoral Dissertations by Chinese Students in America, 1905-1960 will be published at the end of this month. I shall send a copy to you and to Dr. Cheng with my compliments.

Although it is a labor of love, I did not foresee the financial risks involved. When Minister Huang Chi-lu was here in August, Dr. P. W. Kuo told him that we would not be able to print it unless “the Ministry of Education” could subscribe a number of copies. He readily assured Dr. Kuo and myself that “the Ministry of Education” will subscribe three hundred copies(at a pre-publication price of $3.50)for distribution to individual scholars and institutions. With this assurance, 1,200 copies were printed. It was only last week that he wrote that “the Ministry” would subscribe only one hundred copies, but would subscribe three hundred copies if an abstract of each dissertation is inserted.

If we knew he would not keep his promise, we could have less number of copies printed. Since it has put us in an embarrassed situation, I wonder whether the China Institute could subscribe a number of copies for presentation to your Trustees and friends. Knowing your financial troubles, we shall leave the matter to your discretion. At any rate, please inform me how many copies are needed, so that they will be mailed to you direct from the printers.

Since your Institute is the center of intellectual activities, perhaps you could help by selling a number of copies at a special pre-publication price. Will you also let me know how many copies are needed?

Thanking you for an early reply.

Yours ever,

November 27, 1961

Dear Percy:

Your letter of 9th November arrived while I was in Boston in connection with the Exhibition of Chinese Art Treasures there. Please excuse the unavoidable delay in answering your very charming letter.

If I understand from your letter correctly, your forthcoming publication will be in the nature of a symposium consisting of essays by noted scholars on Chinese art and letters. Since you will have all essays ready for printing by first of February next, it seems advisable that you go ahead with your original plans. At any rate, please do not defer its publication until 1963 simply for the sake of my bibliography on Chinese art and archaeology.

Whether my bibliography would be ready in 1963 would depend in a large measure on financial support from the American Council of Learned Societies. The Committee on Awards usually consists of men who know nothing about the history of art. I shall have a good chance of obtaining the grant, if my application is supported by such outstanding scholar like yourself.

If I am lucky to get the grant, I shall come to London in the summer and shall make my headquarters at your Foundation, if I may. My European travel would enable me to gain access to materials not available in this country.

In view of the size of the bibliography, it will be published as monograph under the auspices of your Foundation. I shall reserve the copyright for myself. I trust this arrangement will meet your approval.

Both Dr. Hu Shih and Dr. Chu Chia-Hua are not enjoying good health and I would suggest that you write to each of them, but I doubt if they could contribute an essay unless their health is fully restored.(Chu suffers from high-blood pressure, while Hu had a severe heart attack)I give their addresses below:

兹有恳者:龙现在欲在美觅一公私基金资助纂制(主用英文,附印汉字):(一)A Glossary of the Technical Terms of Chinese Book(主要对象为西方中文图书馆之工作人员及一般从事汉学教学者);(二)Bibliography of the Study of Tun-huang Art(主要对象为中外从事研究敦煌艺术者);(三)Anthology of T'ang Poems on Wang Chao-chün(旨在作为西方一般读者与中国文学专家之参考)。

Dear Professor Hansford:

Professor Simon recently suggested that I should ask your advice about the publication of A GUIDE TO DOCTORAL DISSERTATIONS BY CHINESE STUDENTS IN GREAT BRITAIN, 1916-1961, which I am compiling at present. He thought that if the Council approves, it could be published under the auspices of the China Society as one of its occasional papers.

The Guide will consist of 350 dissertations and will take about forty pages when printed. I shall be responsible for the printing cost, and it does not involve any expenditure to the China Society. If it could be published as an occasional paper, I shall use the same format and same color of the cover.

I shall appreciate it very much if you could advise how many copies would likely be needed for distribution in England at 15/-per copy. Do you send out advance notice to members, or leave it to a book dealer? Any advice from you will be much appreciated.

Needless to say, I am looking forward to the early publication of the second edition of your Glossary of Chinese Art and Archaeology.

Dear Dr. Yuan:

Thank you very much for your letter of Nov. 3 and for your kindness to inform me about Prof. Li Tsung-tung's personal collection of Chinese books. I have written to Prof. Lao Kan and asked him to get a list for us. We are not giving up hope of Prof. Lao's coming.

I also have forwarded your letter to him, as soon as I received it from you.

We have a copy of your bibliography: the China in Western Literature and our Main Library has a copy also. I suggested to Dr. Rudolph to order one for his Dept. I also recommended our Library to buy 2 copies of your Russian Works on China in American Libraries.

I hope everything is fine with you and your family. Season's greetings,

12th December, 1961

Dear Dr. Yuan:

I was glad to receive your letter, and I have been considering your suggestions. I think it unlikely that the China Society would be a suitable publisher for your Guide to Doctoral Dissertations by Chinese Students in Great Britain, 1916-1961. In the first place, the Society only accepts for publications writings which the Council considers are primarily of interest to its members, most of whom are British. Each member is entitled to a free copy of all the Society's publications. Other copies are sold to the public, but the highest price charged for an Occasional Paper is 6/-. The Society has no sales organization and most of its publications are sold through its agents, Luzac & Co., 46 Great Russell St., London, W. C. 1.

Luzacs'would probably be a suitable publisher for your Guide. In the case of China Society publications which Luzacs'sell, they receive a commission of 50%of the published price, from which they have to give a commission to retail booksellers. To advertise your guide, I should suggest that you prepare, when the book is printed, a short prospectus, which Luzacs'would circulate with their quarterly book-list. You might write to Luzacs'and ask for their suggestions.

Please let me know if I can be of further help.

Yours sincerely,

S. Howard Hansford

Dear Professor Prusek:

I have recently asked my publisher to send you a copy of my compilation entitled: Russian Works on China in American Libraries, 1918-1960. Please accept it with my compliments.

I am at present compiling two bibliographies:(1)on Chinese Art and Archaeology; and(2)on Sun Yat-sen, 1866-1925. I am sure that there is a great deal of literature in Czech language which is not found in the United States. I would therefore appreciate your help if you could solicit the assistance of your experts to send me a list of Czech literature on these two subjects.

Your help in sending me the literature on Marco Polo is especially appreciated. When the ms. is published, I shall certainly send you a copy. If you need any American book, please let me know. I shall be glad to send it to you.

22nd Dec., 1961

Dear Dr. Yuan:

Thanks for your letter dated 11th Dec. enclosing a draft Preface for your coming work. I have been extremely busy lately. That is why I have been rather late in my reply. I was also a little confused when I received your letter, because just two days before I met at the China Institute a man, named Albert Lu, who spoke to me more or less about the same or rather same sort of thing. Now, I have found out that what he wants is my biographic notes, and so the matter is clear.

As you do me the honor of asking me to write the Foreword of your work, I shall be glad to do so. But I have some urgent work to do at present and, therefore, hope that you won't mind if I send you my draft by the end of January.

We had the pleasure of seeing your daughter in London at our house last year. We hope she is quite well.

With best wishes for a Happy New Year.
