I am continuing to bear in mind the need for photostating our永乐大典, and will press recommendations on this matter at the earliest opportunity.

We have practically completed photostating of all our Chinese titles and shall make an effort to send you a copy so that you will know what we now have. This will facilitate greatly future recommendations on your part.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Sven Hedin:

c/o Swedish Consulate-General,

Chicago, Ill.,

U. S. A.

Dear Dr. Hedin:

I have just received your letter of January 23, in which you informed me of an overwhelming gift from the Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Geographical Society. I hasten to write you a few lines to tell you how we appreciate your good offices. Really, it is most good of you to arrange with the societies on our behalf. I have been hoping for something, but four boxes are more than I ever dreamt of.

I have had a telegram from my brother, and I expect that he will be in Peiping when this reaches you in Chicago. Several weeks ago, he wrote about sending down by camels the boxes of material, he himself returning via Siberia, but he is coming back by the camel road. Please feel easy about him.

This is hurriedly written in the hope of reaching you in Chicago. I and your friends look forward to your return among us with great eagerness.

Yours sincerely,

T. L. Yuan

I am looking forward to a visit to your Library as one of the pleasures ahead of me, should I have the rare fortune of another visit to Peking. I yet recall with appreciation the courtesies extended to me by you and your staff during my last visit of 1925-27.

Very sincerely yours,

March 19, 1932

Dear Dr. Yuan:

As long ago as December 8 you will recall you wrote to Dr. Hummel inquiring whether Mr. W. Y. Yen, of your staff, might have an opportunity to work in the Library of Congress “for three or four months from September 1, 1932”. The inquiry had of course immediate sympathetic attention from myself as well as from Dr. Hummel. An answer to it was necessarily delayed by our inability to forecast the condition of our funds next autumn. The uncertainty still exists and will exist until the passage of the appropriation bill, which may be delayed for some weeks to come.

In view, however, of the long lapse since your inquiry was addressed to us, I wish not to delay longer an assurance that unless some mishap occurs to our estimates, we shall be glad to arrange for that period of service here for Mr. Yen, provided he can be content with a very moderate compensation at the rate of $1240 per annum.

Very sincerely yours,

Librarian

3 HSI-CHIAO HUTUNG

PEIPING, CHINA

March 28, 1932

Dear Mr. Yuan,

Many thanks for sending me the brochure by Dr. Li Chi on “Manchuria in History”. It is very interesting even though at this time it smacks more of politics than of scholarship. One might be led to believe after reading this pamphlet that during the earlier dynasties the central authority of China represented by the emperor had an organized control over such outlying districts as Manchuria but we all know that this was not true. Such control as existed was of the most nebulous type.

With kind regards,

Yours sincerely,

John C. Ferguson

Introduction、Proto-historic Phase、The First Chinese Administration(Circa 1134 B. C.-352 A. D.)、The Uprising of the Native Tribes and the Interim Periods(352-1372 A. D.)、Back to the Empire-A Reunion,共计43页,另有四页插图、一幅时代表格、三幅东北地区地图(汉武帝、唐代、明朝,皆为蓝红双色印制)。

Mr. Yen himself tells me that he is planning to accept this appointment, and we shall be glad to see him here next fall. With kind regards, I am,

I was so glad to learn that your brother had come so far as to Mongolia and that he was expected to Peiping early May, and I hope he arrived as you expected. He has been away for five years, and I can understand what a pleasure it will be for you as well as for the whole family to meet him. Will you, please, give him my kindest regards congratulating him to his homecoming and to having fulfilled this long and successful journey, the results of which will become an honour to himself and to his country.

Mrs. Lagerberg, whom I saw the other day asked me to remember her to you.

Hoping that the boxes will reach Peiping before long and in good condition.

I am yours sincerely,

S. H.

7 Lighthouse Point, Peitaiho,

7 August, 1932

Dear Dr. Yuan:-

I have often wondered how you were spending the summer, and whether you had been able to get away from the heat and humidity which characterize Peiping at this time of the year.

I hope your brother has been able to do the work he had in mind in southern Shansi, and that he was able to attend the meeting at Hsi-an, it must be drawing near the time, I imagine, when he is to be back in Peiping. I expect to return there myself around the first of September, and when I do so, I look forward to seeing both you and your brother and resuming those discussions which we had last spring. I am in a position now to speak with some definiteness, on our part, and I feel sure that we can arrange something which will bring important results. Between us, we have the men, the means, and the will, and I am sure that the opportunity will not be lacking, although I confess that the news I receive in regard to conditions in Shansi is not quite as reassuring as it might be. Of that, however, you and your brother will be better judges than I.

Mrs. Bishop joins me in heartiest good wishes to yourself and Mrs Yuan. As ever,

Sincerely yours,

August 12, 1932

Dear Dr. Bishop:

Thank you very much for your good letter of August 7th. Owing to illness, my brother was not able to take the trip to Shansi as he had planned. He is now moving his house to the East City which will be very near to your place.

I was not able to get away this summer as it seems much more busier when we work half day.

A small library is being organized at the Lotus Hill, and I hope you and Mrs. Bishop have been there.

I hope Mrs. Bishop has fully recovered now as a result of a quiet rest. Looking forward to seeing you early in September,

Yours Sincerely,

My dear Mr. Yuan:

In various letters addressed to Dr. Swingle and Mr. Hummel, you have requested that we furnish the National Library of Peiping with photostatic copies of the 35 volumes of the 15th century manuscript encyclopedia, “Yung Lo Ta Tien” of which ours are the original and only extant volumes.

You will be interested to learn that arrangements have now been made to photostat these 35 volumes. Because of pressure of other photostat work, it will be some time before the reproductions will be available. We have estimated that the cost of making these reproductions will be $210.00 and they will be sent to you on a priced exchange basis at this valuation. In return, we understand that you are prepared to supply us with facsimiles of the 85 originals in the collection of the National Library. We are very glad that the exchange can be arranged, so that you will eventually have in Peiping either originals or duplicates of all outstanding volumes of this national treasure.

Sincerely,

7 Lighthouse Point, Peitaiho,

20 August, 1932

Dear Dr. Yuan:-

Thanks very much for your good letter of the twelfth instant. I was indeed sorry to learn of your brother's illness, but infer that he has quite recovered, since you tell me that he is moving to the East City. I should be glad if you would offer him my sincerest good wishes, and say that I look forward to seeing him in September.

I have been busy this summer going over the results of Mr. Tung's excavations in the Wan Ch'uan region, in S. W. Shansi, at what seems beyond doubt to be a West Han site. I notice repeated several times on the bricks a design that suggests, to me at least, a highly conventionalized tree; I have traced two forms of this design from photographs of the bricks in question, and enclose my sketches herewith.

It has occurred to me that this design cannot have escaped the notice of antiquarians, and I believe that not a little work has been done in the study of ancient bricks and tiles. So, it occurred to me that perhaps you might be able to tell me whether the design I mention is a known one, and if so, what is its Chinese name and significance? I have no doubt that you have, among your staff at the Library, someone who can give me the information I am seeking.

If so, I should like to learn not merely the name of the design but also what is believed to be its significance, and also the name of the work in which it is described, if it is not too much trouble.

Another object found in the course of our excavation was a coin of the kind usually referred to, I believe, as the Wu shu ch'ien(). I am under the impression that this type of coin is confined to the period of Wang Mang, the usurper; if I am right in this, it would raise some presumption regarding the age of the site which Mr. Tung investigated. Perhaps your antiquarians can inform me regarding this point also.

Thanks very much for your kind wishes regarding Mrs. Bishop's health. I am glad to say that although she has had one or two relapses, or perhaps recurrences, she is not progressing favorably. Mrs. Todd, who has been treating her, was in yesterday, and says Mrs. Bishop will be able to travel back to Peiping about the end of the month.

We both join in most cordial regards to yourself and Mrs. Yuan, as well as your delightful children. I remain,

Sincerely yours,

Dear Mr. Bishop:

I am glad to have your letter of the twentieth instant. Concerning the two impressions on the bricks, I wonder whether you would be able to send me a set of photographs. They seem to represent the Chinese character Ts'in(晋)but a photograph would help to determine more easily.

Coins known as Wu Shu Ch'ien(五铢钱)are not necessarily confined to those of the period of Wang Mang, as each period has its own type of Wu Shu Ch'ien.

Mrs. Yuan and I are delighted to know that Mrs. Bishop is progressing very favorably.

With warmest regards to Mrs. Bishop and your goodself,

Sincerely yours,

T. L. Yuan

Peitaiho, 26 August, 1932

Dear Dr. Yuan:-

Thanks very much for your good letter of the 22nd instant, with the information it gave me. Your suggestion that the design on the Han Bricks is in reality a character is most interesting, and as soon as I return to Peiping I shall procure for you some photographic prints, as you so kindly suggest.

Regarding the Wu Shu Ch'ien, I am wondering if the period when they were first made is known? Some of our field staff believe the site is that of Han Wu-ti's altar to Hou tu, erected in 113 B. C., and as our coin was found there, it might establish at least a presumption.

We are leaving for Peiping in a couple of days, and I hope to see you and your brother very soon.

Ever sincerely yours,

C. W. Bishop

Dr. Sven Hedin:

c/o Swedish Consulate-General,

Chicago, Ill.,

U. S. A.

Dear Dr. Hedin:

I have the pleasure to inform you the safe arrival of six cases of books which you kindly arranged to send to us from Sweden. If words can be used to express our gratitude, I would have employed them as means to this end. However, I wish to assure you that we highly appreciate your courtesy in assisting us to acquire this valuable collection of Swedish literature, and to your dear sister we wish particularly to express our hearty thanks.

The cases have not yet been unpacked. As soon as they are opened and the books arranged, we shall duly send our formal acknowledgements to the various institutions concerned.

I hope that the work on the Temple replica is proceeding very nicely. My brother and I are looking forward to your return to Peiping with much pleasure.

With sincere greetings of the season,

18 September, 1932

Dear Dr. Yuan:-

In accordance with your suggestion, made to me while I was in Peitaiho, I have procured photographs of the particular Han design regarding which I wrote you, and am enclosing them herewith, indicating the designs I am curious about with an arrow.

Some of the designs on these fragments are unquestionably inscriptions; but I am wondering whether this particular one can represent a character? As far as my experience goes, it regularly appears in pairs, in the one case being inverted.

Knowing how carefully Chinese antiquarians have studied ancient bricks and tiles, it has occurred to me that possibly this particular design may have been assigned some specific name, by which it is commonly known among antiquarians.

In these disturbed and unfortunate times, it is difficult to make any very definite plans about such things as scientific research. But I am wondering if your brother is well enough again to think of anything in the way of field work? I hope that he has quite recovered from his illness of the past summer, and as you wrote me that he was moving somewhere into my part of town, I hope I may see him again soon.

Pray remember Mrs. Bishop and me most cordially to Mrs. Yuan, and believe me, with all good wishes,

Ever sincerely yours,

C. W. Bishop

Dear Mr. Yuan:-

It was exceedingly kind of you to send by Mr. Sanford Wang the silver salt and peppers, which we received the other day. Mrs. Hummel and I appreciate your thoughtfulness very much, and wish to thank you most heartily for the gift.

I have not yet met Mr. Wang, but hope to do so later. Perhaps he can, before his return to China, take advantage of the three months'stay in our Library which Mr. W. Y. Yen had, unfortunately, to forego.

When you yourself are in this country next year I hope you will make the Library of Congress your headquarters. You can here have a room to yourself, and every facility will be given to promote your work.

Mr. Ashley has given us verbal approval that photostating of the Yung Lo Ta Tien will proceed as soon as the photostat operators permit. I might say that to your list of extant volumes, published in 1929, should be added the following two volumes which we have added since them.

No. 13589-90

No. 14055-56(a recent loan from John Gilbert Reid).

We are checking through the list you sent us and will order what we can, although our appropriations are seriously cut and we have orders to proceed very cautiously this year.

Dear Mr. Yuan:-

I noticed in a letter addressed some time ago to Mr. Blanchard of the Accessions Division you raise the question as to whether we could not decide on a definite sum to make possible the copying of valuable old gazetteers.

In view of our reduced appropriations, I do not now dare to ask for a special sum for this purpose. But if you can send us three or four such transcribed gazetteers “on approval” at intervals of every two months or so, I feel sure there will be no difficulty about purchase. This will give work to a scribe and will be of great advantage to us.

I shall shortly send you a complete photostat volume of all our independent works from which your assistants can check what we have. I hope also to send you a separate Index gazetteer, as we are very anxious to build up this side of the Library.

Dear Sir:

You letter of September 19, regarding certain of our classification schedules which your Library lacks, is at hand.

According to the records of our Publication Section, we sent your Library in November, 1929, an almost complete set of classification schedules(lacking Class PN which was at that time exhausted). In order to complete this set, we have forwarded to you(under separate cover and free of charge, by regular mail)a copy of Class PN-PR-PS-PZ,-even though you have not requested it. We regret that on account of the limited edition issued of these schedules, we are unable to supply more than one set to any one institution. Additional copies of the schedules may be purchased from the Superintendent of Documents(Government Printing Office, this city),at the prices indicated in the enclosed list(Supplementary list of publications, pp. 4-5)

The scheme for Class L was included in the set of schedules sent to your Library in November, 1929. The schedules for chasses CN, K, and PQ and PT are still incomplete, and we are unable to say when any of them will be available. Class PB-PH is in press, but we do not know when it will be ready for distribution. A copy will be sent to your Library, however, as soon as it is available. Class PJ-PM has not been completed sufficiently to send to the printer.

The Catalogue of the Möllendorff Collection has, we understand, reached the Library of Congress; and the Chief of our Division of Accessions is writing you concerning it.

Dear Mr. Yuan:-

We have sent you by post unbound photostats of the following Yung Lo Ta Tien: 6831-32, 10934-35, 10949-50.

By the end of this week, we shall have sent, in addition, the following: 10998-99, 11000-11001, 11076-77.

We are photostating them full size, rather than reducing them; and we did not bind them, thinking that you would want them bound in China like the originals-which cannot be very well bound that way in this country.

You will notice that we have marked a red line to the right of the characters which represent titles of books and which, as you know, are red in the original. We did this to facilitate future copying by hand if you desired to do that. The red marks should have been to the left, but as my assistants had begun the other way, I let them continue, in order to avoid confusion.

As I wrote you before, we shall welcome manuscript copies of old gazetteers if you can send them “on approval”. I am sure there will be no difficulty in getting such approval for two or three each month or so, despite our drastic curtailment in appropriations.

Dear Mr. Yuan:-

In my letter of November 22, 1932, I listed six volumes of photostats of Yung lo ta tien which we had sent, or were sending, to you. Since then, we have forwarded, each separately by mail, photostats of the following volumes: 11951-52, 11953-54-55, 11956-57, 11958-59, 11960, 11980-81, 12013-14, 12015-16.

I have likewise sent you two large volumes, being photostats of 13,500 titles of all independent works in the Library of Congress prior to July 1st. of this year. Please accept them with my compliments. In reassembling so many cards there are bound to be errors, omissions and displacements some of which we have already discovered and some you, or your assistants, will discover as you refer to the work. I noted only yesterday omission of the card for the 1926 edition of the 道藏 in 1120 volumes-a really inexcusable error. If you run across others, please let me know.

Due to the heavy cost, we photostated only four copies: one for Professor Pelliot in Europe, one for Dr. Swingle, and one for ourselves. I hope this index will guide you in sending us gazetteers, ts'ung shu, or other rare works on approval. If possible, I shall later send you a separate gazetteer index as being more convenient.

Dear Miss Gaskill:

You may probably be wondering why we have not sent you a copy of our volumes of Yung Lo Ta Tien in exchange of the volume which you kindly sent to us(Chung 13453). The reason is that we have been waiting to hear from you whether you would prefer manuscripts facsimiles or photostat, and also what particular volume you would like to receive. As soon as we hear from you, we shall arrange to copy or to photostat the volume that you like to have.

May I ask whether an early arrangement can be made to photostat for us the other three volumes of the Encyclopedia in your Library? The small size suggested in my previous letter would reduce the cost considerably. We shall highly appreciate any personal assistance you will render us in this connection.

With best wishes and hearty greetings of the Season,

Yours truly,

T. L. Yuan
