February 19, 1930

Dear Mr. Yuan:

I fear we cannot afford to purchase the diplomatic documents offered by Mr. Wang Liang. Since so much of it is being published, we shall have to content ourselves with that.

I shall let you know before long whether we can afford to purchase the reproductions in color of eminent Chinese scholars which are offered for Mex. $6. each. Our funds for this year are very low and we have orders to go very slowly in buying. Last year we had a special gift, but this year we are dependent on our regular funds, or less than that.

About the further copying of the manuscript Ming dynastic history, I shall let you know shortly. Payment will be made for what is already copied as soon as the manuscript transcriptions arrive.

Very sincerely yours,

Arthur W. Hummel,

Chief, Division of Chinese Literature.

Dear Dr. Hedin:

I am sending you herewith 4 volumes of the Jules Travels which you wished to borrow from the Library.

Li Yu-ying urging him for a decision of the Lama Temples应该是询问李石曾对承德普陀宗乘之庙万法归一殿搬迁(仿造)计划的回覆。

Oxford

2 March 1930

Dear Dr. Yuan,

No doubt my reply to your kind letter of 24th December has reached you safely, in which I expressed my sincere gratitude for your interest in our project of obtaining an exact facsimile of the Ricci Map. I at once informed the Royal Geographical Society, who was very grateful to you and the Authorities of your National Museum.

On Thursday last I went to the Bank and arranged for a draft for £5 to be sent you on account, but the same evening received yours of Jan. 16, regretting that the Museum had found itself unable to carry out the proposed arrangement, so I cancelled the Bank draft for the time being.

May I, nevertheless, trespass on your kindness to interview the Authorities again. For the photos of the Map which they have so kindly sent, and which will no doubt reach me in due course, I am grateful. I regret, however, that they will not enable us to call as much attention to the Map as we desire. May I, therefore, beg you to explain that if we may have an exact facsimile of the Map, supplied of course at our expense, it will be exhibited in the Hall now being built, and act as a valuable advertisement for the Museum's proposed publication of it, especially in this country, America and the countries of Europe. Wide attention will thus be drawn to it, and add to the fame of the Map and of your Museum. We would not hinder, in any way, the public demand for the published copies, but rather further that demand.

I shall therefore be greatly obliged to you, if you will again explain the position to the Authorities, and beg them to carry out the original arrangement, that is, to supply us with as exact a facsimile as may be possible, in size, paper, and other details. If it is possible to do this for £10, well and good. If that sum is insufficient, may I leave the amount to your decision.

W. E. Soothill

March 7, 1930

Dear Baron Stael-Holstein:

On behalf of the Palace Museum, we want to thank you for your good offices in securing the splendid gift from Mr. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., which has enabled us to restore four Lamaistic temples in the Imperial Palace. The Lamaistic images are now preserved from destruction, a fate that had threatened them for some time, and will be available to students in the days to come. We would also request that you would be kind enough to convey our thanks to Mr. Rockefeller, Jr., for his timely donation.

It is most gratifying to us to be able to inform you that as a result of Mr. Rockefeller's gift, which was the first of its kind received by the Palace Museum, other friends were moved to make gifts to help us in our work. President Chiang Kai-Shih gave a large sum toward the repairs of the gate, towers, etc., which have greatly improved the approach to the Museum. Sir Percival David and Mr. Joy Morton have contributed toward the repairs of the halls used for exhibiting porcelains and bronzes. When we think that these gentlemen were influenced by the example of Mr. Rockefeller, our gratitude to him is all the greater. In conveying him our thanks, kindly inform him that his gift has not only enabled us to make repairs to the Lamaistic temples, but has also served as an impetus to others to make similar gifts.

Assuring you of our keen appreciation of your constant interest and assistance, we remain,

Yours sincerely,

T. L. Yuan

March 24, 1930

Miss Edna M. Sanderson,

School of Library Service,

Columbia University,

New York City, N. Y.,

U. S. A.

Dear Miss Sanderson:

I am very glad to receive your letter of February 18, and specially appreciate your kindness in sending me the Library Service News Bulletin. It will keep me informed of the activities of the present School and also news about the old acquaintances I made during my sojourn in America. The library has been receiving from Columbia the announcements and reports of the Library School.

I have made arrangements with Mr. Howson to send over one of our cataloguers to work in the Chinese library at Columbia. This gentleman, Mr. James W. Y. Yen, is leaving in the summer to arrive in New York in September. It is my understanding with Mr. Howson that we should send over, as exchange librarian from China, a well-qualified young man every two years to help him in the Chinese library, while he would allow him facilities to study in the School of Library Service. Now that the arrangement with Mr. Howson has been made, I have to request you to give whatever assistance you can to Mr. Yen.

15 May, 1930

Dear Dr. Yuan:-

I have just received the word from my former associate, Mr. A. G. Wenley, for which I was waiting. He informs me that he will reach Tientsin on June 6th, and will be in Peiping about a week. He will be back in Washington in the autumn, where he will be with our Curator, Mr. John E. Lodge, and can take up in person matters which, if left to correspondence, would entail great delay.

Hence, I am anxious to have him meet you while he is here, and discuss the matters regarding which you wrote me, and in which I personally see great opportunities for doing a real piece of constructive work, valuable to scholars the world over.

Do you expect to be in Peiping around the 9th or 10th of June? I should like to have you and Dr. Liu and a few others meet Mr. Wenley at an informal “stag” dinner, and talk things over, and then no doubt Mr. Wenley can come out to see you at your present headquarters for more definite discussion. Mr. Wenley's stay here will be short, and there will be much for him to do; but I regard your proposal as a most important one, to which I want him to give ample attention.

I do not know whether you met Mr. Wenley when he was living in Peking. He was here with me from 1923 to 1925, and then went to Paris for two years'further study, under Prof. Pelliot and others. For the past year and a half, he has been in Kyoto, studying Japanese. Mr. Lodge's idea is to give an opportunity to promising young men to study Chinese and Japanese, in order that they may interpret Far Eastern, and particularly Chinese, culture to the western world. Hence it is altogether probable that you may someday find Mr. Wenley spending a lot of time studying at the National Library; for that, I fancy, will be the logical place for him to do much of his work.

Please let me know if you are going to be in Peiping at the time I have mentioned. If it suited you, we might make a tentative date for the evening of the 9th, which will, if I am not mistaken, fall on a Monday. I should like to have Dr. Liu there too, for as Reference Librarian he will no doubt be in a position to guide Mr. Wenley's investigations in many ways, and aside from professional matters, I found him very good company indeed on the occasion of your recent luncheon.

With renewed thanks for your many courtesies, and hoping to have the pleasure of seeing you soon, I remain,

Very sincerely yours,

C. W. Bishop

Dear Mr. Bishop:

Thank you very much for your kind letter of May 15. I shall be delighted to renew my acquaintance with Mr. Wenley. The time you suggest would suit me and Dr. Liu admirably. May I also bring over Mr. Hsu who has charge of our archaeological collection and who is an expert in Chinese archaeology.

If Mr. Wenley has no previous engagement, I hope you will arrange to have him pay a visit to the Library. I should like to have you and Mr. Wenley come to lunch on June 11, or 12 at one o'clock.

I am much gratified at finding you taking so much interest in the project I communicated to you. I hope we shall be able to do something to facilitate studies in Chinese archaeology.

Please assure Mr. Wenley, when he arrives, that he will be most welcome to pursue his research in the National Library.

29 May, 1930

Dear Dr. Yuan:-

This is just by way of being a reminder that I am looking forward to the pleasure of seeing you and your two colleagues, Dr. Liu and Mr. Hsu on Monday evening, June 9th, at 6.30 p. m., at the Hotel du Nord, when my former assistant, Mr. Wenley, will be present, and also one or two others that I have asked to join us. Mr. Wenley himself, as you perhaps know, set out to be a librarian before he got diverted into Chinese studies, and I am sure we shall find lots to talk about. It is just a “stag”, and very informal, so don't dress.

I don't quite know how to address Mr. Hsu, and don't like to write a separate invitation to Dr. Liu unless I write one to Mr. Hsu also. So, I am hoping they will both pardon me if I make this a collective invitation to all three of you. I should appreciate it if you would extend it to them as such.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the 9th prox., then, and with my most cordial respects to Mrs. Yuan and yourself, I remain,

Sincerely yours,

Dear Mr. Bishop:

Thank you so much for your kind invitation on Monday evening, June 9th, which Dr. Liu, Mr. Hsu and myself accept with great pleasure, we are looking forward with much pleasure to seeing you and Mr. Wenley.

We have recently acquired a number of models of the Three Palaces of Peking and various Imperial Tombs. In addition, there were included numerous maps of the old Summer Palace, all of which are of great historical importance. Although it will take some time before we can put them in good order, I shall be very glad to arrange a private view for you and Mr. Wenley.

If convenient, will you and Mr. Wenley come to lunch Wednesday, June 11th, at the Library in Chung Hai at half past twelve o'clock? Hoping you are able to come.

31 May, 1930

Dear Dr. Yuan:-

This is just by way of confirming and perhaps amplifying my penciled acceptance of your very kind invitation, for lunch on the 11th prox. I shall look forward to the occasion with much pleasure, and so, I am sure, will Mr. Wenley when he hears of it.

I feel very strongly the importance to both our countries of the building up a body of strong, sound scholarship to interpret the two nations to each other. And one of the best ways in which this result may be achieved, in my mind, is by exchanging not only professors, but students. We welcome Chinese students in American institutions of learning, and I am happy to see young Americans resorting in increasing numbers to Chinese universities, libraries, and museums. It augurs well for the future. Mr. Wenley is only the first of several young students of Chinese whom we either actually have studying now, or have in mind. He is fortunate, he says, in a letter just received, that he is to meet you and your colleagues and establish contacts which cannot but be most helpful to him later.

Looking forward to seeing you and Dr. Liu and Mr. Hsu,

June 26, 1930

Miss G. Gaskill,

North China Language School,

Peiping.

Dear Miss Gaskill:

I am sending on approval the following Chinese books:

The above are all published by the Palace Museum, being reprints of rare books in its collection. The first is Ming geographical work on foreign countries as known to the Chinese at that time. The second and third are works on Chinese ink, a subject of considerable interest to Chinese Scholars. The last is a poetic work of a famous Sung poet. The text of this original edition is quite different from the current text, and thus it has great bibliographical interest. It will be seen that the first is a type reprint, but the others are photo-litho reprints. I think Cornell may be interested to have these reprints of rare books.

I do not know whether you have noted from an advertisement in our Bulletin that a group of friends have undertaken to finance a publishing scheme on behalf of the National Library. The National Library will prepare for publication ten series of rare books, many of them prohibited works of a historical nature concerning the Ming-Ch'ing period, a tentative list of which is enclosed. Most will be reprinted by type, but a few will be reprinted by photo-litho. Whether we can put through the entire scheme or not depends upon the number of subscriptions we receive. Subscription is now invited. Except in the case of supporting members, no advance payment need to be made. Bill will be sent with each series of books as published. It is expected that the first series will be published in August or September, and the whole will be completed in several years. The cost of the whole will not be in excess of $50, if the exchange rate does not go below 3 to 1. If you feel the books selected for reprinting are of sufficient sinological interest, I hope you will place a subscription on behalf of Cornell.

With best regards,

Yours sincerely,

Prof. Paul Pelliot,

Dear Sir:

I beg to inform you that at a recent meeting of our Board of Management, you were unanimously elected Special Correspondent of the National Library of Peiping. A formal letter in Chinese inviting you serve as Special Correspondent is enclosed. I sincerely hope that you will honor us with your acceptance.

I believe that you have already noted from our Bulletin that the National Library of Peiping was formed last year as a result of the amalgamation of the Peiping Library and the Metropolitan Library. The amalgamation of these two libraries is of far-reaching importance, and it is our hope to build up a representative national library, of which, in spite of her literary tradition, China has only made a modest beginning. I hope you will favor us with your valued advice and assistance.

Hoping to be favored with your acceptance, I am,

Yours faithfully,

July 7, 1930

Dear Mr. Yuan:

I have received your letter of June 10th, 1930 in which you state that you are sending what books were available from those we picked from Lai Hsun Ko's catalogue. Naturally, this has not yet arrived, but I wish to thank you most sincerely for your cooperation in getting them for us, especially the rarer works of Wang Kuo-wei's. It is kind of you also to include in the list the other works published by the Palace Museum. We always appreciate your sending the rarer items of which we have no knowledge. You can count on our cooperation in the purchase of these items whenever you send them from time to time.

Without going through the formality of the official routine, I hope you will send to us the reprints of rare works which the group of book lovers of the National Library of Peiping is publishing. Kindly include in this list also the publications issued by the Sinological library in Nanking. The list you sent of the latter publications contains thirty-three items. Since they are not expensive, I request that you send the whole list on to us for approval. I may say that it is not at all likely that these will be sent back, for the librarian places the highest confidence in your judgment and has so far approved every item that you have sent us.

You have doubtless received the request of the Accessions Division for the complete copying of the two Ming manuscript histories even at the advanced price of which you reminded us in a recent letter. We have so far received the first sixty volumes of the set and are very much pleased with the same. I note from the corrections in red ink, that the work has gone through a process of proof reading after being transcribed. This list of course, is very essential to insure the accuracy of the copier.

I hope that before long we can come to some decision on the copying of the Yung Lo Ta Tien. Dr. Swingle had this matter in hand for so many years that I have been waiting for him to make a recommendation to the librarian about it. I understand that he will be in Peiping in the fall, and trust that after talking with you he will make some recommendation. I agree with you that a manuscript copy like the two you have sent us is far superior to any photostat and I hope you will impress this upon him when he comes.

Thanking you for your thoughtfulness in considering our needs, I remain,

Ever sincerely yours,

Arthur W. Hummel

Chief, Division of Chinese Literature.

Mr. I. V. Gillis,

Peking.

Dear Mr. Gillis:

I take liberty to recommend you the following five works, viz:

Item No. 4 has the musical notation printed with the text and is very nicely printed. It is printed in 1847, but as the blocks were destroyed during the Taiping Rebellion, this book is extremely rare.

Item No. 5 is an early Ming edition of the Three Kingdoms. The first volume contains prefaces dated 1494 and 1522. This is the first edition printed soon after the author Lo P'in wrote it, and the text differed entirely from later editions. Being the first edition of a famous novel that exerted great influence on the masses, it occupies a very unique place in the field of Chinese literature. According to Mr. Hsu, whose bibliographical knowledge I have great respect, it is not likely that another copy would ever appear in the market. In July 1927 our Library, after much search, obtained a copy of this edition, in 48 vols, at $1000.00 and it was then considered very fortunate.

Please do not hesitate to return any of the above items, if you are not interested.

Your sincerely,

Dear Capt. Gillis:

With reference to your inquiry about Mr. John Kwei, I am quoting below for your information a paragraph from his letter to me received while you were away:

“As to the reasons why I had to leave there, I put you into my confidence. First of all, I wish to record the kindness of the authorities of McGill University towards me, and to state that I enjoyed the companionship of Miss Swann and others. There was no misunderstanding on either side, between me and the Library. In fact, they enjoyed my stay and I loved my temporary work. All together I have been in Canada about 16 months. However, I was and am conscious that my life-work should not be in Canada, but in China. All I have been trying to do is to gain experience and knowledge. I feel that I need a little study on the Library of Congress classification, so I came to Chicago since last October. This course is now offered by Prof. Hanson who was the Chief of the Cataloguing Division of the Library of Congress from 1897-1910, and perhaps he is more able to give this course than anybody else in the U. S. A. This is the main reason why I left Montreal.”

Some months ago, you told me that McGill is planning to secure the service of a trained librarian to work on the Gest Chinese Research Library. If, after July 1931, McGill is still inclined to do so, I hope one of our cataloguers may have the privilege of working there. May I count upon you for making the necessary contact?

This year we have sent one of our men to Columbia, being the first “exchange librarian” from China. I hope the arrangement will prove helpful to both parties.

Yours sincerely,

It is now almost two months since I got back to Ithaca, and if I had not been so busy getting settled again and caught up with my work here, I should have written sooner to thank you for all your kindness to me while I was in Peking, which I do appreciate very much.

I was puzzled when I didn't hear from Mr. Yen when I expected, and then dismayed to learn that he had difficulty at the last minute about a visa, and relieved when I learned, soon after, that he was here all right. I saw him in New York a couple of weeks ago and he seemed to be getting settled and acquainted quickly.

I have talked with Mr. Kinkeldey, our new librarian, and with Mr. Willis about having our volumes of the Yung Lo ta tien photostated so that we can send copies to you, and they are entirely in favor of it. There is, however, no photostat apparatus here that is adequate to do the work, and it will have to be done some place else. Mr. Kinkeldey is trying to make arrangements to have it done in Rochester. Perhaps we shall begin by having only one volume done, to see how it works out.

Part of the I wu shih mo for the period from 1851-1874(Hsien Feng and T'ung Chih)is now out, I understand. I had asked Mr. Yu, the administrative secretary of the Museum, to have the first installment sent to me at the Language School with the bill, but since it did not come before I left, I am writing now asking him to deliver it to you instead. Can you, without too much trouble, have t'ao(four pen to each t'ao)made for it before sending it to us?

Can you get for us, too, a copy of Chung Kuo jen ming ta tzu tien?

We shall be very glad if you will have some paper made for us, as you suggested, with the name of the Collection, ________on it, in red, and if you will have made for us a copy of the manuscript夷氛闻记which I saw in the Chung Hai Library.

I wonder if you found it possible to obtain for us a copy of the privately printed(Lin Wen-Chung kung i kao)(not Lin Wen-Chung kung cheng shu, which we already have).

I am enclosing twenty-five dollars gold, which ought to be enough to pay for the I wu shih mo(forty dollars, Peking currency, isn't it?)and the t'ao, the Chung kuo jen ming ta tzu tien, and leave some over for the paper and copying the manuscript. If it is not enough for all please let me know and I will send some more; if I have not already done so-I shall probably be bothering you often with requests for something or other.

I talked with Mr. Howson while I was in New York about the purchase of books for Columbia, but it seems hard for them down there to understand the differences there are between buying books in Peking and in Europe, and I do not know just what they are going to do about it.

With best greetings to both you and Mrs. Yuan, and thanks for all your help,

Sincerely yours,

Dear Dr. Hedin:

I have hoped to come to see you this afternoon, but things unforeseen have come up which prevent me from coming.

I am enclosing this letter which I shall send to the Academy on behalf of my brother. Will you kindly put your signature on it?

The Academy would like to have a statement of the scientific work which my brother has done in Sinkiang. Could you prepare one for my brother? The application should be sent out before next Wednesday.

Yours sincerely,

T. L. Yuan

P. S. Dr. W. W. Yen was in town a few days ago, and he told me that he would be glad to hold his house for you until December or January, if you wish to take it.

Dear Miss Gaskill:

I think you have by this time well settled down in your work at Cornell. We have to wait for the completion of our new building early next spring before we can hope to settle down at all, and then it will mean so much difficulty to move.

Three more titles have now been published in the series of reprints by the Palace Museum, while we have published four in the series sponsored by a group of our friends. As you said Cornell would want to have both series for the Wason Collection, I am sending the books by registered post to the University library, bill enclosed in the packages. I hope the books will reach you in good condition.
