New York——Mr.

Dear Dr. Fahs:
With the generous assistance of your Foundation, I was able to complete a major portion of my bibliography on China. After much unnecessary delay, it has recently been published. A copy is being mailed to you from the publisher. A copy is being mailed to you from the publisher and I hope you would accept it with my best compliments.
Another piece of research, smaller in scope, is nearing completion and I am rather anxious to make it available to a wider circle of readers. I enclose herewith a short memorandum about this work and I hope your Foundation may find it possible to lend me the needed support.
Like my bibliography on China, the present work is also a labor of love as I have been continuing the research outside of my office hours. I hope, therefore, that your grant could be made to me as a mature scholar, not through an institution.
However, if your grant has to be made through an institution, may I suggest the name of the Institute of Modern History of “the Academia Sinica” which will be glad to sponsor such a project.
Thanking you once more for your valuable help.

Dear Dr. Yuan:
Following receipt of your letter of February 20 with regard to the question of help for work on a bibliography on China in Russian literature, I brought the matter up for discussion with my associates here. I regret now to have to reply that we see no possibility of obtaining here the help which you would need for this project.
I regret having to report this negative conclusion to you as I recall very vividly our earlier discussions in Peking about the need for Russian studies and so understand that this has been a long-time interest of yours.

Dear Professor Fairbank:
Referring to my bibliography of Russian works on China, I applied sometime ago for a small grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. As I had expected, it was turned down by Dr. Fahs. But when he attended the Annual Meeting, he seemed to have been especially impressed with the papers by John Thompson and Martin Wilbur and the discussions which followed.
After that session last Wednesday, he did promise that he would refer my request to the Division of Social Sciences of the Foundation, as the bibliography chiefly consists of materials in the field of modern history and the social sciences.
In view of your interest in this project, I hope you would write to the Division of Social Sciences supporting my request for a grant. If it could be obtained from this source, I would include important articles on China which would make the bibliography more useful to scholars. For your information I enclose copy of the memo which I had submitted to the Foundation.
As the Foundation prefers to make grants to institutions, I hope your Center would supervise the project and to have it published under the auspices of the Center. If you would make it clear to the Foundation that your Center would be glad to administer the grant, it would meet the approval of the Foundation.
Although I have not talked with Prof. Kennedy about the printing, I am sure that he would be glad to do the offset printing after the manuscript has been typed and proof-read in Washington.
Yours sincerely,

Dear. T. L.:
We greatly enjoyed our evening with you and appreciated the chance to get together.
I have just received a letter from one of our students in Leningrad who says that a new edition of Skachkov's Bibliografia Kitaya, brought up-to-date, is now at the press and should be out in June or July. He also adds that the announced edition is rather small, but I do not know exactly how to order copies.
The publication of such a volume, since it will be in Russian and not in English, would by no means make the publication of your own bibliography undesirable. On the contrary, the latter would be of great help, but I imagine that it would be desirable to see Shachkov's volume before proceeding to the publication of your own. I hope we may keep in touch on this point and that whenever the Skachkov volume is seen by you, you will let me have your impressions.
With cordial regards,
John
P. S. I have just received your letter of April 4 and the copy of your statement for Rockefeller. It seems to me this bibliographical effort is important, and I will certainly stand ready to urge our Research Committee to give it the sponsorship of this Center. The one problem is to get hold of the new Skachkov volume, about which I know no more than is stated above. It looks as though everything will have to be held up until we can see it and your project can take account of it.

Dear Mr. Clapp:
As your Council is dedicated to the development of American library resources, I wish to submit herewith a memorandum regarding a Union List of Russian Works on China which I have been compiling for several years.
As a labor of love, I have been doing this work outside of my office hours and without clerical assistance. Now, a number of scholars have urged me to publish it on the grounds that Russian sources contribute to a better understanding of China, particularly at this time. Dear Dr. Yuan:
I acknowledge with much interest your letter of May 20, 1959, and return herewith, in accordance with your request, the bibliography on “Russian Works on China, 1918-1958”, being a selection, in the field of history and culture, from the larger bibliography having the same title.
We are sympathetically much inclined to the assistance which you request and are very conscious of what this bibliography represents in terms of scholarship and expenditure of time. We are also impressed by the potential contribution which it might make.
Nevertheless, as I think you are to some degree aware, we have been compelled to abstain from the support of bibliographical work, for the very simple reason that there is so much work of potential usefulness which needs such support-unless these projects can promise either the widest general usefulness or the demonstration of improved techniques which can be carried to other work.
Much as I admire the accomplishment represented by China in Western Literature, and much as I would be very happy to assist in the publication of this supplement to that work, I must regretfully tell you that I do not believe this to be within the scope of the program of this Council.
I do not know whether there is other assistance which I might bring; but I would be very happy, were this the case.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Mr. Yuan:
Thank you for your kind letter. Regarding your problem of transliteration, however, I do not feel qualified to be of any advice to you. The most I could do is to answer your question on the official pronunciation of the name Bali in the Indonesian language: It is pronounced just as it is written; b as in bad, a as in far, l as in land, I as in Chinese li.
I have no idea where the characters峇里have come from. It is possible that they have been derived from some early Chinese record. But so far I could check from secondary sources, they have not been derived from二十四史,星槎胜览,瀛涯胜览,海语,佛国记,本草纲目,东西详考,太平寰宇记。
The problem of identification of ancient geographical names have always interested me. However, due to my present exhausting job, I have not yet been able to do any research of my own.
I am sorry that I have not been able to be of any substantial help to you. I hope that in the meantime you have found the answer to your problem from other sources.
Please give my regards to your family.

August 8, 1959
Professor George E. Taylor, Director
Far Eastern and Russian Institute
University of Washington
Seattle, Washington
Dear Professor Taylor:
In view of your interest in Inner Asian studies, some of our common friends suggested that I should solicit your advice in regard to the support of my project on Sinkiang. During the past twelve months I have been engaged in compiling a comprehensive bibliography on Sinkiang the scope of which is set forth in the enclosed memorandum. Although it is a labor of love, I am now in need of clerical assistance in order to bring it to early completion.
Since the Russians have taken a lion's share in the exploration of Sinkiang, Russian literature is of great scientific importance. Although I have collected over 1000 titles, there is still a long way to go. To analyze the serial publications volume by volume is a time-consuming task; but when the work is completed, it would be of great help to future scholars and policy makers.
I should like to obtain a small grant for $3000 for the first year and $2000 for the second year mainly for clerical assistance. Mr. Vetch in Hong Kong would like to publish it as it is cheaper to have it printed in Hong Kong than in this country.
As you are a great promoter to Russian and Inner Asian studies, I know you would be willing to render some assistance if circumstances permit. Would it be possible to include it as one of the research projects of your Institute? I shall be much honored if it could be published under its name.
Here at the Library of Congress, I have better facilities for a work of this kind. If I could have some financial support, the project could be completed in two years.
With cordial regards,
Yours sincerely,

Dear Professor Fairbank:
After you had informed me that Skachkov's Bibliografia Kitaya is being brought up-to-date, I ordered four copies through four different channels. But so far none of them has turned up.
While I have been hoping to see the appearance of Skachkov's before proceeding to the publication of my own, I have recently had some encouragement from Professor John M. Thompson, now at Indiana University. He suggests that I should explore the possibilities of obtaining a small grant(about $2000)from the Joint Committee on Slavic Studies. He further indicated that the “Slavis series” at Indiana would be interested in publishing my bibliography when it is completed.
I am therefore sending my application to the Social Science Research Council as the closing date for applications under this program is November 2. Since you are very much interested in this work, may I ask you to serve as one of my references? Enclosed herewith is a “confidential report” form. Please mail it directly to the Council.
A selected bibliography in the field of history and culture by Russian authors has just been issued by the Monumenta Serica. I have asked the editor to send you a copy of the reprints and another copy for your Center.
Thanking you for your interest and help,

Dear T. L.:
I am glad you are going ahead with the Joint Committee on Slavic Studies. The counterpart on contemporary China is just getting underway and as yet has no program or funds. I have written to SSRC in the strongest support of your project.
Our own efforts here are still held up awaiting the prospect of some kind of financing. Even so, I am by no means certain how much we can put into bibliographical work. I am sorry not to have got this Center behind your current bibliography but it seems to me most appropriate for the Joint Committee on Slavic Studies to take it on. Please let me know how this comes out.
Thanks for the reprints you mention from Monumenta Serica. We are leaving January 1st on sabbatical leave but will be in Washington at Christmastime, when perhaps we can get together.
With cordial regards,
John

Dear Professor Prusek:
It has been so long since I had the pleasure of seeing you last in Peking. I am therefore much flattered by your request for a copy of my bibliography on China. I am asking my publisher to send you a review copy and I hope it arrives safely. When your review is published, may I request for a copy?
I am also asking the Editor of Monuments Serica to send you direct from Japan a reprint of my article on Russia works on China which might be of interest to you.
As I am compiling a bibliography on Marco Polo, I would greatly appreciate your assistance if you could ask your librarian to send me titles of books and articles on Marco Polo published in Prague. The following two book are the only ones I have seen already.
I am also anxious to obtain bibliographies on China and Mongolia published in Prague and in the Soviet Union. If you could help me in obtaining these bibliographies, I shall be most grateful.
I have ordered Skachkov's, but so far it has not been received. Do you happen to have seen the revised edition?
No doubt you have built up a good collection of Chinese books in your Institute. I should like to visit your beautiful city once again.
With cordial regards,
yours sincerely,
T. L. Yuan

Dear Dr. Yuan:
I am glad to act as one of your references for SSRC, and hope the project is approved. However, I must confess that I am even more anxious to see the appearance of your companion volume to China in Western Literature, that on periodical articles.
I return Dr. Thompson's letter to you, but not the copy of your articles, since you did not ask for it. If you want to have it back, please let me know.
I also enclose my review of another Russian book which may be of interest to you. Have you heard that Sovetskoye Kitayevedenie has gone out of existence, apparently after its third issue(1958)? See Edmund Clubb's article on Soviet oriental studies in Pacific Affairs, vol. 32, no. 3(Sept. 1959),p. 306.
I did not know that you know Russian, but the MS of your Monumenta Serica article looks like a fine piece of work. May I suggest that when your larger bibliography is completed, it would be useful to have it read by a Russian specialist. I wish you could make the bibliography really complete by visiting libraries in Russia, but the small grant you ask for obviously makes such a step impossible.
Sincerely yours,
Derk Bodde

December 8, 1959
Dear Professor Wagatsuma:
As I have been compiling a bibliography on Japanese law and legal institutions, I have included the following articles which you contributed to various journals:
1.Democratization of the family relation in Japan
2.Guarantee of fundamental human rights under the Japanese Constitution
3.Chattel mortgages in Japanese law
4.Japanese legal system 1945-55……
As you have undoubtedly written other articles in Western languages, may I request you to send me a list, indicating in which journals they are to be found.
My bibliography consists of books and articles on the laws of Japan including literature in Russian, Italian, French and German, besides English. No works in Japanese are listed in view of your excellent bibliography in the Japan Science Review-Law and Politics.
At present I have no idea where it is to be published. I thought the Editor of Monumenta Nipponica may be interested in publishing it, but I shall greatly appreciate your advice.
There are about 1600 titles in this bibliography. If it could be published in Japan, it would be a useful tool to research scholars in the field of law.
Thanking you in advance for your help,
Yours sincerely,
Tung-li Yuan

1.《伦敦蒙难记》1897年英文本已照像寄来,另有伦敦Times的记载甚多,如果需要可照相寄来;
2.美国照好的日本军部及外交档案,与《抗战实录》关系最大,全套约两万美元,目录随信寄送;

Dear Mr. Yuan:
I am sorry to have to report that the Subcommittee on Grants of the Joint Committee on Slavic Studies, at its meeting on December 19, did not vote to recommend that the Council award you the grant in the program for research in Slavic and East European Studies requested in your application dated October 28, 1959.
The Subcommittee, finding that the total amount requested by the substantial number of candidates was considerably in excess of the funds available to it, has been regretfully obliged to disappoint many well-recommended applicants.
Please forgive the formality of this communication. We are resorting to the use of a form letter in order to notify all applicants without delay.
Sincerely yours,
Bryce Wood
