Dear Dr. Yuan:
It was with great interest that I read the title of your paper, “Archaeological Work in China, 1949-1952.” on the AOS program. I am here in Japan on a Guggenheim Fellowship working on a history of Chinese archaeology-not an art history, but a history of the development of archaeology in China as a science-and this is just the kind of material I am interested in.
In fact, I have just been preparing such a survey myself from some reports that I knew of such as those in Chung Kuo yan chiu, Min Tsu Hsueh yen chiu, K'o Hsueh t'ung pao, etc. Do you plan to publish your paper? If you do, I shall not attempt to publish my survey but shall use the material in my book and will rely upon your paper for additional information. I shall be glad to hear of your plans.
The last time we met was in the Library in Peking in 1948 with Mr. Koo. I now want to write to him on behalf of our library and wonder if you will be good enough, when you answer this letter, to include his address. As you know, we have a large shipment of books tied up there, for which we have paid, and are trying to get them released.
With warm regards, I am
Sincerely yours

My dear Dr. Yuan:
Thank you very much for your letter of May 1st. Prof. Elisséeff, Hightower and I have had a conference on the list of Chinese drama and novels from Prof Chi-Ju-shan's library. I have been authorized by them to make an offer of one thousand dollars($1000)for the whole collection with the exception of the two titles mentioned in your letter of May 1st. Will you kindly communicate our offer to the owner?
I have calculated the total number of volumes in the collection, which amounts to 332 vols. Thus, the unit price is equal to about $3.00 per volume which is 50%higher than the price which we have been paying for Ming and Ching editions from Bunyudo and other Chinese bookstores in Japan.

June 23, 1953
Dear Dr. Yuan,
I do not know whether you remember me, but I may recall to your mind our first meeting in Professor Chao's house years ago, when you came over from Peking with a few friends and countrymen of yours. So, I am taking the liberty of writing you after two years'stay in Italy. I feel very much honored by getting in touch with you after Professor Chao gave me your address and encouraged me to write you. I want to inform you that the University of Venice and Professor Tucci's Oriental Institute in Roma are preparing a centennial celebration of Marco Polo, in 1954. They are planning the publication of one or two volumes of scholarly contributions more or less connected with Marco Polo's book and era. Both are eager to have Chinese scholars represented in this publication of an intercontinental character.
Would you contribute to it with one or more essays devoted to some aspects of Chinese history and civilization during the Yuan era? I am sure that both the hometown of Marco Polo and Professor Tucci would very much appreciate your cooperation. Moreover, I shall be grateful to you if you could suggest some more Chinese scholars who might join you in the celebration of the Venitian traveler.
With kind regards,
Yours sincerely,

Dear Dr. Olschki:
I am so happy to hear that you have returned after two years'absence. I shall be greatly honored to collaborate with you in the forthcoming celebration of Marco Polo. Thank you so much for your remembrance.
For sometime past, I have compiled bibliography of writings about Marco Polo in European languages. It would be appropriate to have it included in the projected publications you have in mind.
The main difficulty in this undertaking lies in the fact that scholarly articles on Marco Polo are so much scattered in various journals that one is always afraid of serious omissions. For Italian titles, I hope you could lend me the necessary support.
I am about to leave for Washington, D. C. and as soon as I get settled there, I shall continue to gather materials for this bibliography. I have also to correspond with scholars in various countries to seek their help and collaboration.
With best wishes for your success in this important scholarly undertaking,
Yours sincerely

July 1, 1953
Dear Dr. Yuan:
Thank you very much for your letter of June 26, in which you advise us that the price asked by Professor Chi Ju-shan for his collection of Chinese books on drama and novels is $2000.
Dr. K. T. Wu's appraisal of the collection for $2500 is rather high, because when Professor James R. Hightower checked over the list, he was willing to offer only $250-$500 for the whole lot. My own feeling is that both of them are rather way off the mark, because Dr. Wu is probably unfamiliar with the current prices of old Chinese books on the present book markets in Japan, since L. C. has not been buying much recently, while Professor Hightower's notion of Chinese book prices was derived form his own expenditures for Chinese old books in Peiping before the war.
Both Professor Serge Elisséeff and I are rather familiar with the present-day prices for old Chinese books in Japan, since our Library has been buying such books rather heavily since 1946. One of the reasons for Professor Elisséeff's trip to Japan in the spring was to buy books for the Library. He came back in April. As I told you in a previous letter, the average price for Ming and Ch'ing editions from Japan is about two dollars($2.00)per pên. For Ming editions alone it is about $5.00 per pên. These figures are a good guide, since the averages have been based upon mass quantities from different dealers in both Tokyo and Kyoto.
Since receiving your letter of June 26, we have recalculated the total number of titles and of volumes. They are 71 titles and 328 volumes. At $4.50 per pên, the price of the whole collection will come to $1500.00, which is the figure Professor Elisséeff has asked me to communicate to you for concluding this transaction. In addition, we shall pay for the transportation of these books from Formosa or Hong Kong to Cambridge. Please communicate our new offer to Professor Chi. Thank you very much.
With all good wishes.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Dr. Chiu:
I have duly forwarded your letter of July 1 to Prof. Ch'i Ju-shan.
In his reply, Prof. Ch'i stated that he is in close touch with the second-hand book market in Japan. His son is engaged in business in Tokyo and is still buying books for him. He asks whether you have found any titles of his collection listed in the catalogues of book dealers.
Being a famous collector, he attaches great importance to his collection. As he is well to do, he is not in need of money. In view of what I wrote him about the work of the Harvard-Yenching Institute, he is willing to dispose of the various items at $2,300. He further promised that as soon as he is able to get the rest of his collection now stored in Peking, he will give a preference to your Institute. For the whole list, please consult the last two issues of National Peiping Library Bulletin.
Such being the case, will you kindly return to him the list of books which I forwarded to you through Dr. K. T. Wu, if you are not interested in its purchase at the price of $2,300.

July 26, 1953
Dear Dr. Chiu:
I have your letter of July 23 stating that your Library agrees to buy Professor Ch'i Ju-shan's collection of books on Chinese drama and novels at $2,300. I wish to congratulate you for this wise decision, as many titles in the collection are so rare that they are no longer easily available. I hope you could arrange to microfilm all the rare editions and make them available to scholars elsewhere.
Before I write to inform Professor Ch'i about your decision, I wish to make sure that it is your understanding that the following two works: 律吕正义后编、拍案惊奇are not included in this lot. I raised this point because Professor Ch'i understood clearly that these two works were not included in the lot when he asked for a price of $2,300. He based his understanding on your two letters:(1)that of May in which you stated that you were authorized to make an offer of $1,000 with the exception of these two items;(2)that of July 1 in which you stated that the total number of titles and volumes in the whole collection was 71 and 328 respectively.
In your letter of July 23, you stated that you “accept this offer without exception” which seems to indicate you wish to include these two items. As I have no list of these books on hand, I have no means of checking the number of titles and volumes. But in order to avoid any possible misunderstanding between you and Professor Ch'i, will you give me another letter making clarification on this point? On hearing further from you, I shall forward all your letters to Professor Ch'i.
With kindest regards,
Yours sincerely,

Dr. T. L. Yüan:
Thank you very much for your letter of July 26 which interpreted our letter of July 23 correctly. We want the whole collection, because we feel that we are paying the maximum price for the books, since your initial price offered to the Library of Congress, as stated in your letter of June 26, is $2500. The reduction for our Library from your original asking price is only $200. Hence, we are justified in wanting the whole collection according to Professor Ch'i's list without any exception. Therefore, our July 23 letter superseded all our earlier letters, which made an exception of the two works you mentioned in your letter for a lower price. However, if Professor Ch'i wants to keep the Lü Lü Chêng i hou pien律吕正义后编, he may do so, because we have the same work in the identical 1746 Palace edition, but we must have the P'o an ching ch'i拍案惊奇, because our edition seems to be different from his.

August 7, 1953
Dear Dr. Chiu:
When I come to Cambridge in September, I expect to consult the following three journals which, according to a list sent to me by Mr. Yui, are on file in your Library:
Meanwhile, may I request you to check up whether any issues published in 1953 have been received.
I understand that your Library has not subscribed any daily papers published in China Mainland. If so, may I recommend the Kuang Ming jih-pao published in Peking? It contains much information on educational and cultural activities which is not found elsewhere.
Mr. K. C. Lau, Fung Ping Shan Library, Hong Kong, has been serving as an agent for the University of Chicago to supply current publications from the mainland. According to Mr. T. H. Tsien, the files of current periodicals from China at Chicago are most complete. If your Library has difficulties in procuring publications from the mainland, you may perhaps like to give a trial order to Mr. Lau whom I recommend highly.
Sincerely,

Dear Dr. Yuan:
Thank you for your letter of August 7. I am very glad to know that you are coming to Cambridge at long last. At first, we were expecting you to be here in August, but now you are coming here in September. That's fine. Beginning next Monday, August 17, the Library will be closed for four weeks for repair and cleaning. Only one or two members will be working here, and the rest of the Library staff will be away for vacation.Professors Elisséeff, Yang and some other faculty members may be here. I intend to be away for about three weeks, and will return to Cambridge on or after Labor Day. If you come here before my return, please drive down with your daughter, who has been at our cottage in Plymouth before, to see Cape Cod.
I am a little surprised to read your statement: “I understand that your Library has not subscribed any daily papers published in China mainland.” As a matter of fact, we have been subscribing to six mainland Chinese daily papers right along, namely,(1)The Jen min jih pao, Peking,(2)Ta Kung Pao, Tientsin,(3)Kuang ming jih pao, Peking,(4)Chieh fang jih pao, Shanghai,(5)Ch'ang chiang jih pao, Hankou and(6)Nan fang jih pao, Canton. But due to the export restriction placed by the Peking Government last year, on export of newspapers and magazines from China, we are not getting any other paper except the Jen min jih pao(The People's Daily)from Peking, for which we have a complete file since its beginning in February of 1949.
Do you think that Mr. K. C. Lau of Hong Kong University would be able to send us all the prohibited papers and periodicals like the Kuang ming jih pao, Hsin hua yueh pao, etc.? If he could get us the forbidden goods, we would be very glad to make him our agent, otherwise his services would be of little use to us, because we already have an agent in Hong Kong. John Fairbank was there in March, and Professor Elisséeff was also in Hong Kong in February. Fairbank made special arrangements with people in Hong Kong to send new publications to Harvard. I also doubt the claim of Mr. Tsien that Chicago University Library has the most complete file of current Chinese periodicals! Since both Mr. Tsien and I could render only partial opinion about each respective library, Chicago and Harvard, please ask some third party to give you an impartial estimate of the strength of these two libraries in current Chinese publications! I was in Chicago in April and had a good talk with Mr. Tsien.
Enclosed please find your list of Chinese periodicals and papers. All those marked “H” are here.
With all good wishes,
Very sincerely yours,
Kaiming

Dear Mrs. Richardson:
In the course of our previous conversation, I understood from you that the Hoover Institute and Library would be glad to store, for the duration of the cold war, a small camera and a carton of books for the National Library of Peiping, Peiping, China.
I am therefore sending them to you for safe-keeping and I wish to assure you of our sincerest appreciation for your assistance.
May I take this opportunity to express to you my hearty thanks for the privilege of using one of the cubicles in the Hoover Library and of consulting the wonderful collection of your books. It has been an unusual privilege which I shall always treasure in the years to come.

Dear Mr. Chiu:
I have received the reply from Prof. Ch'i which I am enclosing herewith for your information. Under the present customs restrictions, it seems wise to solicit the assistance of USIS in Taipeh. If I remember correctly, Mr. Josiah W. Bennett has been in charge of the Information Service. May I suggest that your Institute gets in touch with Mr. Bennett who may like to be of service to you.
The Hoover Library here receives all the current issues of the mainland daily papers subscribed through the Apollo Book Shop, Hong Kong. The last issue of the Kuang ming jih pao received here was dated July 18. If you do not receive the prohibited papers, you may try Apollo or Mr. Lau. Under the present circumstances, it may be worthwhile to use more than one agent in Hong Kong.

October, 10, 1953
Dear Dr. Yuan Tung-li,
As you probably know, we are preparing throughout the coming year to celebrate the 7th centenary of the birth of Marco Polo. We wish to solemnize this important cultural event in honour of the great traveler, by a series of lectures to be held at our Institute, and by publications edited by the same: to this purpose we wish to avail ourselves of the cooperation of the outstanding Orientalists of our time. Prof. Leonardo OLSCHKI and many other personalities are of course cooperating.
We are requesting the kind cooperation of Chinese scholars, and naturally we could not overlook your name, considering your most valuable contributions to the Polian Bibliography. I have the pleasure to inform you that among the many publications edited by our Institute, a remarkable place is given to the collection of IL NUOVO RAMUSIO, volumes dedicated to records of famous travelers and history of geography. It would be therefore most suitable to include in our collection a volume on the complete Bibliography of Marco Polo, with special regard to the Eastern part of it. If you could take charge also of the part concerning the West, it would be all to the better. Of course, such plans require careful definition, but I am only giving you a broad outline of our program, and I would be much obliged if you could assure me of your cooperation, at least on principle. You have specialized in a most unusual and valuable field, and your help would be greatly appreciated. The prestige of the man who we want to honour, and the common interest we take in his work, give me confidence that you will kindly help for the success of these celebrations.
Hoping to hear from you soon, sincerely,
Giuseppe Tucci

Dear Professor Tucci:
It is indeed a great pleasure to hear from you and to learn that plans for celebrating the 7th centenary of the birth of March Polo are well under way. I am particularly delighted that a complete bibliography of Marco Polo may be included in your collection of IL NUOVO RAMUSIO. I am fully confident that under your leadership and distinguished direction, the celebration next year in honour of Marco Polo will be a great success.
It would indeed be a great honour to me to be able to contribute a bibliography on Marco Polo. As I have planned, this bibliography would include all editions of Marco Polo and all important writings about him and his travels which are published in all Western European languages as well as in Chinese. There are, in addition, a number of books and articles in Japanese which you may prefer to ask the cooperation of a Japanese scholar for their compilation, so I shall not try to include them.
There are a number of scholarly articles on the famous traveler scattered in various Italian journals. Without any index to these articles, it has not been easy to check them fully. If possible, I shall plan to take a short trip to Italy next summer in order to examine them personally. Meanwhile, I hope some of my Italian friends would be able to help me in any way they can. I shall also look forward to your personal help and encouragement.
With warmest regards and all good wishes,
Yours sincerely,

I am so happy to learn from your recent letter that you and your family got out of China at last. When you have time, please write me more fully concerning the help you received in evacuating from China. I hope you obtained some support from the International Refugee Organization at Hong Kong. Do you know if the eldest son of General and Mrs. Horvath got out after all. The last news I had of him was that had been detained in prison.
I have written to President Y. C. Mei whose address is care of the China Institute, 125 East 65th Street, New York 21, N. Y. and urged him to mail you a letter certifying you that you were a professor of History at Tsing Hua. With this letter you might be able to find better position in Canberra. I hear that Mr. Fitzgerald is now in New York, but I have not met him. Lord Lindsay is there connected with the Far Eastern Department, I hope he may be of some assistance to you.
Thank you for conveying the news about my brother and his family. As to the piano, the one I had before 1937 had long been sold. The one I bought in 1947 was remodeled in Shanghai which my sister-in-law does not quite remember. So, when you write to her, just tell her that it is very old piano and Miss Liu whom we had entrusted her to sell would not substitute it. Sorry for this misunderstanding.

Dear Dr. Yuan Tung-li,
Many thanks for your very kind letter of November 12, which I have received with great pleasure. I did not doubt you would take a deep interest in our planned celebrations in honour of Marco Polo, and would kindly and willingly help us with your exceptional knowledge with regard to a bibliography on the great Traveler.
I am also glad to hear that you take into consideration coming to Italy next Summer, and I assure you it shall be a pleasure to welcome you among us. Concerning your research work on articles and scattered papers to be found in Italy, you will receive from our Institute all the help you may need. In order to facilitate this research, you had better give us some precise indications about what papers or books you need to consult, and we will do our best in this connection. The lack of an index is of course a great drawback, but you will be able to overcome it thanks to your fine scholarship.

Dear Dr. Yuan:
It was a great pleasure to me to hear from you last week and to know that you are still well and active. In reply to your question, Marco PoloⅢandⅣare not yet published, but I hope to hear soon that the French government is prepared to publish them. Nothing is yet quite decided, and I do not suppose that anything can actually appear before 1955.
It is very good news that you are making a Supplement to Bibl. Sinica. I was very much afraid that it would never be kept up to date, and many of us suffer from the want of any complete bibliography of Far Eastern works. I hope that your Supplement will have an index from the first. I send a list of my own writings printed in 1933, and have written in the margins the papers that have been printed since then. In the last section(Miscellaneous)I have marked some items which may concern China, and my In Memoriam of my Father(G. E. M.)contains a list of his publications.
With all good wishes for your health and prosperity in the coming year.

S. C. Cheng, Chung Chi College, Caine Rd.
