5 January 1951

Dear Mr. Yuan:

Your letter of December 19 concerning the possibility of procuring Chinese publications from Canton deserves immediate action, and without waiting further I enclose a check for $100.00 in the hope that you can use it to begin a flow of current materials from the Canton area and the back files of appropriate publications. Naturally this must be a bit experimental. We will try to make desires more specific when we know more of the possibilities and also as our efforts here to develop a project for translation develop.

I look forward to seeing you about the middle of January in Washington to further about this.

We will eventually meet the problem of bringing these materials into the Harvard collection in such a way as not to create overhead and unbalance in the collection. But I think we should probably begin as though this were a special project on an emergency basis. The object of your agent in Canton should be to get materials which are of interest concerning the current situation and the recent past. You can suggest the type of thing we need quite as well as any of us could. We would be interested in all aspects and in ephemeral publications, posters and the like, quite as much as in regular periodicals. On the other hand, we want to avoid mere junk which is repetitious and duplicative. I suppose this is a utopian concept and will therefore leave it in your hands at your discretion.

Our next move should be to work out a more effective plan for the flow of these publications so as to get it regularly financed.

I am looking forward to seeing you.

With best regards,

John K. Fairbank

Dr. Agnes M. Pearce, Secretary

China Medical Board

New York 22, N. Y.

Dear Dr. Pearce:

As I am engaged in compiling a scientific bibliography of China, I am in need of a list of scientific staff of the Peking Union Medical College at the present time. If your office happens to have such a list, may I borrow it for a few days?

If you have any information from Dr. Lee, perhaps you will let me know. Dr. Lee is an old friend of mine and I have great admiration for his ability to handle situations in times of emergency.

Dear Dr. Yuan:

John tells me that you would be willing to furnish me with a list of Chinese scholars in America for the next issue of the Far Eastern Quarterly with their present positions and addresses. I should certainly much appreciate having such a list for the “News of the Profession” and am sure that it would interest our readers.

The copy for the May issue has just gone to press, unfortunately-for I should like to have had it for this issue. The next is the August 1951 issue for which the deadline for my receiving material is April 10th. I realize that it may be more difficult for you to provide current addresses for persons in a summer issue when people are eager to be changing jobs. But I hope you will consent to undertake it.

You will understand that the Chinese scholars of greatest interest to Far Eastern Associations members and FEQ readers are those who are specialists or some experts of Far Eastern affairs & cultures(rather than natural scientists, etc.).

I was glad to find news of you from China. My kind regards to your family too.

Sincerely yours,

Wilma Fairbank

Of course, I always want news of special researches going forward here or in China.

To whom it may concern一件,证明所习过之国史及国学科目。

Dear Dr. Yuan:

In answer to your inquiry of January 5, I am sending to you under separate cover a lot of seven directories of Chinese students in the U. S. A. from 1934 to 1943 which belong to the Library, and also a folder of Tsinghua, Yenching, and Nankai alumni in the U. S. A. which belongs to me personally.

As no doubt you have access to the Directories of Chinese students in America published by the China Institute, we are not sending those to you.

As to the microfilm camera which belongs to your Library, please take it away at your earliest convenience.(I can send it to you charges collect by the Railway Express.)Since your Library still has many rare books deposited in the Library of Congress, you can surely also deposit the camera over there too.

After the camera leaves Cambridge, I shall write to Mr. Koo, telling him that in the eyes of the American government you are still the Librarian of the National Library of Peiping and that you still have the custody of its funds and its property(e. g., rare books)in America. Regarding the property of the National Library, he should write to you and not to me as a private citizen of China. We three are all friends, but we must get the legal points straight in our minds, so as not to hurt our personal friendship.

January 26 1951

Dear Mr. Yuan:

It was a great pleasure to see you in Washington and make up schemes for the promotion of good works as we used to do some time ago. In this connection, I am wondering if I should put on record our hope that you will be able to prepare privately a list of Chinese scholars in Formosa, Hongkong and Europe, giving their names, addresses, fields and some synopses of their careers with a view to having this information privately distributed to individual specialists in Far Eastern studies in this country, not for purposes of publication in any formal way or to the general public, but merely for the information of the leading scholars in the United States.

I wonder, on second thought, if you still agree that this would be a good idea, as it seems to me. If so, I wonder how this might best be done? I should think that any list you might prepare could be duplicated by the office of Mr. Graves and sent out through it. Or, alternatively, I should be glad to do so here in my capacity as secretary of the ACLS committee.

In either case, I should be very glad to hear from you as to this project. I hope that we may separately be able to follow up on the project for a digest and will let you know about it in due course.

Dear Dr. Yuan:

I am sorry to have delayed so long in sending you a staff list of the P. U. M. C. We have had no list later than that of September, 1949, but we have revised it as best we can, so that I think it is reasonably accurate. Dr. Loucks, who left Peking last June, has been able to bring it up to date at least to that point. I enclose the list we have prepared.

I regret to have to tell you we received a cable from Dr. C. U. Lee last week reporting that the P. U. M. C. had been nationalized on January 20. We hope that it will be possible for Dr. Lee to send us written details in due time, but of course are not sure that he will be able to do so or that he will be able to say very much. Like you, we have great admiration for Dr. Lee. He has brought the College through many emergencies during the past few years and successfully handled many difficult situations. We know that the recent development was beyond his control.

Mr. Troup Matthews, Foreign Student Adviser(Teachers College除外),University Hall Annex, Columbia University, New York 27, N. Y.

Professor Clarence Linton, Student Adviser, 108 Teachers College Main Building, Teachers, College, Columbia University, New York 27, N. Y.

Prof. C. P. Fitzgerald, The Australian National University, Box 4, G. P. O., Canberra, A. C. T., Australia.

March 12, 1951

Dear Dr. Yuan:

How has your work been going this winter? Have you been able to assemble any further material in Mongolia? This spring I am hoping to get the time to settle down to draw up a draft report on the whole subject, using your material, Mongol material that we have translated here, and my own material.

For egotistical reasons, I should also be very much interested to hear whether you have been able to add to your “Lattimore bibliography”.

You know you are always welcome at any of our seminars over here. Would you like to receive regular notification of them? On Monday next, March 19, we are planning to have a seminar on Khalkha Mongolia, given by Mr. Vreeland. We are also expecting Nathaniel Peffer that day, as a visitor from Columbia, and possibly Mr. Sundaram of the Indian Embassy. If you should care to come over and join us for lunch at twelve o'clock noon, we should all be delighted to see you.

March 27, 1951

Dear Prof. Yuan:

Thank you very much for your kind letter March 22, 1951. Though the information does not seem to have been encouraging enough, yet I feel very grateful for your deep concern.

I will follow your kind advice by talking the matter over with my tutor and see what he could do.

As there is an emergency program for Chinese students who have come to the States before June 1950, I wonder if you could kindly make some enquiry whether I could be benefited by that scheme. I went to the States to study in the University of California at Los Angeles, 1948-1949. It was your brother, Dr. T. L. Yuan, who sent me abroad as a faculty member on leave. By Christmas, 1948, I was stuck financially. However, I pulled myself through by working at odd jobs. Before I went to the States your brother recommended me to the British Council as one of the candidates for B. C. Scholarship. But as the result of which could not be known until 2/3 of a year later, Dr. suggested I had better go to the UCLA first since there was an opening at the time. All unexpectedly I got a letter from the British Council by April 1949 saying I had been granted the B. C. Scholarship. As I was financially stuck and as I was told I could study Shakespeare under Prof. A. Nicoll, I decided to leave UCLA in the middle of my work. Here I am working at the moment for M. A. on translation and production of Shakespeare. If I can get a chance, I will resume my work in UCLA or Yale for Ph. D. if you think the possibility is there, I will get a letter of readmission from UCLA at once.

I have talked with the British Council authority about your enquiry. Because of a drastic financial measure, the staff members of the British Council itself are to be cut. As for the possibilities of considering applications from Chinese now studying in the States or anywhere else it is entirely out of the question at least for the moment. One even hinted they wouldn't do that even they were in a position to for reasons beyond their control.

With thanks and regards, I am

Yours respectfully,

C. H. Chang

My dear T. L.:

This is a much belated expression of gratitude to you and Mrs. Yuan for the wonderful hospitality you both extended to me while I was in Washington last month. The many pleasant moments spent with you have meant a lot more to me than the sessions of the Philadelphia Conference.

From Washington, I went on to New York, where I stayed until April 17th. calling on old friends, seeing prospective publishers, book-hunting, etc. And to pay for my extended truancy, I have had to meet class many evenings for extra make-up sessions, which have kept me busy ever since my return. Hence my failure to write and thank you and Mrs. Yuan sooner, for which I trust you will forgive me.

I wish also to thank you for taking all the trouble to order the cards for me. The package arrived in good order quite a few days ago but still remains unopened! My conscience feels guilty every time I look at it on my desk top. Hence this hasty note to tell you I am not ungrateful. I shall write you again at greater length as soon as I have a breathing spell.

Meanwhile warmest regards to you both and to the children.

May 18, 1951

Dear Madam:

You were very kind to send me, at my request a list of the scientific staff of P. U. M. C. for which I was deeply grateful. It helped me a great deal in checking the published writings of the leading professors of that College.

For several months I have been engaged in compiling a bibliography of the writings of Chinese medical doctors and physiologists. The purpose of this project is to have a complete record of medical literature written in Western languages by Chinese authors during the last forty years.

In view of the large amount of editorial work, I have felt the need for clerical assistance, although I am doing it entirely as labor of love. For this reason, I wonder if the project would fall in any way within the present or potential activities of your Board. I would like to explore the possibilities of obtaining a modest grant(about $1,500),in order to bring it to a successful conclusion. A statement regarding the project is herewith submitted.

If your available funds for this year have already been allocated, may I suggest that you hold my application for consideration next year, as my bibliography would not in any way be completed until the summer of 1952. When the manuscripts are typed ready for the printer, the China Institute in America will be glad to publish it in book form.

If Dr. Harold Loucks is still in New York, please convey to him my greetings. You may like to ask his advice in regard to my project.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr. Yuan:

Miss Agnes Pearce has turned over to me, for information and reply, your letter of May 18th containing a request for financial assistance by the China Medical Board in your project of compiling a bibliography of Western medical and physiological literature by Chinese authors. I will be glad to place this request before the Board, which is now in the process of formulating its future program. It may, however, be some months before sufficient progress is made for specific requests of this kind to be given consideration. Also, it is not yet clear just what limitations the Board will set up for the type of project which it is willing to consider. I am very much interested in the work you are carrying out, however, and shall see that you receive further information concerning your request as soon as it is possible to supply such data.

I have wondered a good many times in the past months as to where you were and what you were doing, and I am very glad to learn about you from your letter. I wonder what is happening at the National Library in Peking these days and whether you still receive information from there. As you doubtless know, the PUMC was nationalized on January 20th, and the China Medical Board no longer maintains any contact with the institution. We hear indirectly that its time and attention is being devoted pretty largely to the care of casualties from Korea.

Most sincerely,

Harold H. Loucks

Mr. T. L. Yuan

11 Eight Street, S. E.

Washington 3, D. C.

Dear Sir:

I enclose a copy of a letter received here from our agent and your acquaintance, T. K. Koo, about the problem of releasing to us books he has acquired in our interests. I'd like very much to have any advice or suggestions you could give me as to procedure in this case. It occurred to me and to Mrs. Man-Hing Yue Mok that yours would be the most useful advice we can call on.

Naturally I'm very anxious to secure these books and feel that it would be in the cultural interests of all concerned if it could be arranged. Naturally however I do not wish to involve the University in any unethical or embarrassing agreements. I understand that normal trade arrangements are difficult both between the mainland and Hong Kong and out of Hong Kong to the U. S. You are acquainted with all of these matters and will know best what I should do.

I might say that the Bank of China has officially expressed regret that it cannot be of any service in this particular circumstance. You then are our only hope and I look forward with much interest to your response.

Your very sincerely,

May 26, 1951

Dear Dr. Loucks:

Thank you so much for your letter of May 22 and for the information you gave me. I am deeply grateful to you for your interest in my work. The project I am carrying on involves so much drudgery that very few people would like to do. I only hope that my devoted service may be of some help to the medical profession at large.

I have had reports regarding the recent developments in the National Library and in the Palace Museum. Both institutions seem to be doing very well. Because of poverty, collectors have been offering their private collections to the state and these two institutions have been busy in receiving gifts of great value. I only regret that the scientific collections which I built up in Peiping have not been kept up-to-date, as no subscriptions have been placed for American and British scientific and learned journals for the last two years.

For this reason, I hope your Board will continue to subscribe the journals for P. U. M. C. and to store them here for the duration of the present emergency. You might see fit to add a few additional journals of general scientific interest which had not been subscribed before. When the time comes for forwarding them to Peiping, I am sure they will be greatly appreciated there.

When you do come to Washington, please give me an opportunity to see you. I can usually be found in the reading room of the Army Medical Library. My telephone is: Li-4-1638.

With kindest regards,

Yours sincerely,

June 6, 1951

Dear Dr. Yuan:

I am venturing to ask you, on behalf of the Stanford Research Institute, whether you know of any competent persons who might be available for cataloguing and bibliographic work on modern Chinese materials. The Stanford Research Institute, as you may perhaps know, is not a part of the University and is not, therefore, subject to all the limitations of the University salary scale. In general, it has been prepared to pay a realistic and competitive salary for work which it needed.

At the present time the SRI is undertaking a series of social science studies concerning modern China, with particular attention to the field of economics. Since their research people will be relying mainly on materials in the Hoover Library, the Stanford Research Institute is prepared to employ and place at the disposal of the Library an appropriate number of qualified persons. We at the Library will have no concern with the research aspects of this undertaking. Our responsibilities end with making all of our materials readily available. There is, of course, in this a very great and lasting benefit to the research in the modern Chinese field which we and others will undertake, since the results of the bibliographic and cataloguing work will be made generally available. I believe that the SRI contemplates initial appointments for a period of one year, with the hope of renewal. If you have anyone who you can suggest, I shall be grateful for an immediate reply. We shall probably have to move rather quickly, since of course bibliographic work must at least be well advanced before the research itself can begin.

Arthur joins me in greetings and all good wishes,

Sincerely,

Mary C. Wright

Dear Mrs. Wright:

It was a pleasure to hear from you and to learn the progress you have made in building up the Chinese collection at the Hoover Library.

In view of the huge collection of source material which you have accumulated, I would suggest that you try to obtain the services of a trained and experienced librarian to assist you in the undertaking. New graduates would not be competent enough to handle the situation.

I have asked several people in the East to consider your offer, but they seem to have been tied up with other work and would not be immediately available. I wonder if you have written Mrs. P. K. Mok of the UCLA at Los Angeles. She might know of someone in the West coast who would be qualified for the job.

I shall certainly bear your needs in mind. If I know some competent people, I shall not fail to let you know.

China as illustrates in European Books of the 17th & 18th centuries; a cultural interpretation,底本已寄光清兄处一阅,拟嘱其阅毕送呈尊处加以指正。

June 18, 1951

Dear Mrs. Wright:

Referring to your letter of June 6 and my reply of June 13, I have given the matter further consideration. It has occurred to me that an experienced librarian may be available and I would like to recommend him to you very highly. His name is Joseph C. Ting who was in charge of our reference work and reading room service for many years in Peking. Both you and Prof. Wright must have met him during these years while you were there.

He is a most conscientious and hard-working librarian and has rendered very valuable services to the library development in China. He has been for the last two years pursuing advanced courses in bibliography and cataloguing at the University of London and will be completing his studies in August. He has never been in the United States which he is most eager to visit and if he could be urged to join your Library, he would be an invaluable asset.

Before writing to him, I would like to know if you have got someone already in the meantime. If not, are you prepared to give him travel expenses from London to Stanford? How much would be the annual salary?

Mr. Ting won great admiration from the authorities of the School of Librarianship both at Liverpool and at London. I think the School would write you most favorably if you would write to the Director direct.

I am suffering from eye trouble and could not write as fully as I would like. Please excuse me the poor typing as I could not go out to buy a new ribbon.

In further answer to your request of May 18th, I now am in a position to inform you that, unfortunately, it will not be possible for the China Medical Board to consider your request.

In proceeding with the matter of future program, the Board recently has received the ruling, by its legal counsel, that grants can be made only to medical schools in the Far East and the United States of America. This ruling has at once eliminated many worthy projects which were being contemplated, including your own, and I am very sorry, indeed, to need to send you this information. Personally, however, I should like to send my encouragement and hope for your success.

I shall look forward to an opportunity to see you at some time when I am in Washington.

June 25, 1951

Dear Mrs. Wright:

With further reference to my letter of June 18, I now find that Mr. Joseph C. Ting did not study at Liverpool but at Glasgow in 1949-50 and at London in 1950-51. His present address is 69 Cornwall Gardens, London, S. W. 7.

As I wrote to you before, Mr. Ting is a most competent person for the work you have in mind. As a reference librarian, he assisted many readers in the use of modern Chinese material. Having had sufficient experience in bibliographic and cataloguing work, he would be able to make all of your materials readily available.

He has an amiable personality and gets along with people very well. Because of his previous record in China, he was awarded a British Council scholarship. If you are interested in him, you may write for particulars to the following:

1.Director, School of Librarianship, University of London, Gower Street, London, W. 1

2.Prof. Otto B. van der Sprenkel, Department of Oriental History, School of Oriental and African Studies, Malet Street, London, W. C. 1

Prof. Sprenkel is a specialist in the modern Chinese field, and I think it was on his recommendation that Mr. Ting was awarded a British Council scholarship.

I have much pleasure in recommending Mr. Ting to you, as I am sure he would be the most suitable person you are looking for.

Sincerely yours,

P. S. In case your Institute decides to have Mr. Ting for a year, I would like to suggest that you facilitate his coming either by paying his travel or advancing one month's salary depending on your own financial situation. I know Mr. Ting is a poor student and has no dollars to pay for the trip. In order to get the necessary visa from the American consul, he would probably need a formal letter of appointment from your Institute. In this letter you may like to emphasize that he will handle the cataloguing of Chinese material, so that there will be no difficulty for him with the immigration authorities.

June 25, 1951

Dear Dr. Yuan:

Thank you so much for your letters of June 13th and June 18th.

Mr. Joseph C. Ting would appear to have excellent qualifications for our purpose. As I think I mentioned to you, in this particular instance the Hoover Library is not the employer; this present project in modern Chinese studies is being undertaken by the Stanford Research Institute, with which we have no formal connection at all. However, since the Stanford Research Institute expects to use our materials, they are prepared to add to their staff enough persons competent in library work and bibliography to see that their research people are adequately provided for. The problem is, therefore, a little different from what it would be if we were proceeding to make an appointment ourselves in the usual way. It may be that in a few more months we ourselves will have the funds to do this. The present opening is in the hands of the Stanford Research Institute. I am, therefore, transferring your letter to Dr. Bonnar Brown of the Stanford Research Institute. He will doubtless write you concerning the salary range contemplated, special qualifications, and the problem raised by the fact that Mr. Ting is now in London.

Arthur joins me in all good wishes.

〔Harvard-Yenching Institute Archives, Letter of Alfred K'aiming Ch'iu to Mary Clabaugh Wright, July 6, 1951〕

July 10, 1951

Dear Dr. Yuan:

Mrs. Wright has written you previously about the research project on China which we are undertaking. This will utilize a large mass of materials at the Hoover Library which are practically untouched since having been received. One of the first and very extensive jobs will be to catalog them and prepare bibliographic information on selected subjects.

It has occurred to us, without knowing anything of your plans, that it just might be possible that you would be interested in coming out to take charge of a group of cataloguers and bibliographers that will carry out this work.

As Mrs. Wright stated in her letter, the program is planned to continue for several years. We are able to make an appointment for only one year, but there would be hope of renewal.

We could pay $5,000 for the year period, which would include a three weeks'vacation. We could also undertake to pay the way of yourself and your wife out here and back.

If you are interested, I should like you to advise me at your earliest convenience, so we can prepare the formal appointment. Naturally we would like to have you as soon as possible, but the program is sufficiently flexible so we can probably conform with your schedule. Accordingly, please indicate when you would be available.

I appreciate your information about Joseph C. Ting, although I am afraid, he is too far away for it to be possible to work anything out with him.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr. Yuan,

Enclosed you receive:

1)The Bibliography of the writings of Prof. E. Haenisch

2)A list of the papers written by me

3)Two Supplements to the bibliographies of O. Franke and A. Forke

In your letter of 20th Dec. 1950, you asked me for another copy of the bibliography of the writings of A. Forke; I hope that you received the copy sent off by me immediately after the receipt of your letter. I hope also that the copy of the obituary written by me in memory of Prof. O. Franke has reached you in due time. I am very sorry I could not send you the bibliography of the writings of Prof. Haenisch before. This delay was called forth by several reasons, but it would lead me too far if I should go here into details. Please, be assured that for the future I shall readily assist you in your bibliographical work. As to Dr. Fuchs, I beg to inform you that he left Hamburg a year ago and went to Munich where he is very likely to get the sinological chair of Prof. Haenisch who has resigned recently owing to age. I informed Dr. Fuchs by letter that you would like to get a list of his writings, but I do not know whether he has complied with your request. If you are still interested in this matter, I shall try to compile such a list. Do you know that Dr. Wolfgang Haenisch, the son of Prof. E. Haenisch, resides no longer at Berlin? He has been recently appointed director of the Library of the University in Marburg.

Finally, may I ask you a favour? I should be much obliged to you if you would kindly inform me whether the Library of Congress has a copy of the following work:

Should that be the case, please let me have a photostat of the different commentaries concerning the last sentences of the Mong-tse = text, included in that work. As to this sentence, J. Legge in his Chinese Classics Vol. II p. 502 says: “The concluding sentences here wonderfully vex commentators. In the‘Supplemental Commentary’(四书翼注论文)are found five different interpretations of them. But all agree that Mencius somehow takes upon himself the duty and responsibility of handing down the doctrines of the sage.” Unfortunately, Legge does not cite the texts of these five commentators.

In this moment one thing more comes into my mind: I need urgently the following articles by李源澄:评胡适说儒,published in Kuo-feng国风Vol. VI, Nr. 3/4(Nanking 1935),pp. 24-35. Please, can you help me in getting a copy of this article?

Thanking you very heartily for your assistance,

July 28, 1951

Dear Dr. Yuan:

I am delighted to have your letter of July 21st and your own direct confirmation of the news that you will be able to join us. We are much in need of your advice concerning the future direction of our program of acquisitions concerning modern China as well as concerning the effective organization materials at this end.

Naturally the great bottleneck is cataloging. We have been fortunate in obtaining the services of a very competent young man who has recently finished his training at the University of Washington, Mr. Wen-chin Wu. He seems to me to be doing an excellent job. However, with one clerical assistant he can scarcely be expected to keep up with the requirements of a large group of researchers. I am still receiving an occasional application, which I am forwarding to the SRI, but nothing very promising is turning up. As usual, it is much easier to find people to use materials than those who are willing and competent to make them ready for use. Fortunately, Dr. Rowe knows the picture well enough to realize that the present SRI staff for this project is unbalanced, and I believe that he is sympathetic to the idea of correcting that imbalance by appointing more people to the library side of the project.

When you first suggested Mr. Joseph Ting, I wrote at once to the Director of the Library School at the University of London and to Professor van der Sprenkel; however, I have not yet had their reply. I also turned over copies of all the correspondence to the SRI people and expressed the hope that they might find it possible to bring Mr. Ting here. I gathered the impression that they were very reluctant to look so far afield as London and that they have so far taken no action. However, they can now see as well as I can the difficulty which is likely to develop in the course of the coming year unless the situation is remedied. I am therefore venturing to repeat to them my earlier suggestion that they seriously consider an immediate appointment for Mr. Ting, with a provision of a salary advance for travel expenses. In all this I am assuming that Mr. Ting as a professional librarian will be quite prepared to “slug it out”. There is always one difficulty in appointing a person of his experience to a routine post of this kind. Such a person often may himself wish to proceed with research and with consideration of the more general bibliographic problems in the expectation that “someone else” will handle the troublesome details. As it happens, we are relatively well supplied or soon will be with people concerned with the broader aspects, and it is just these troublesome details that may throw the whole project into jeopardy. It would be most helpful to me and also to the SRI people if we could have your assurance that Mr. Ting would be prepared to devote himself to library chores.

Looking forward to seeing you in September,

Sincerely,

Mary C. Wright

Curator, Chinese Collection

P. S. Your letter of July 26 has just arrived. The enclosed recommendation of Mr. Ting is certainly impressive. I will return the original as soon as it has been copied.

It looks a little as if Mr. Ting may be too competent a person for the routine work of cataloging here, but I should like to have your opinion on this point.

July 31, 1951

Dear Mrs. Wright:

Thank you ever so much for your letter of July 28. I am particularly happy to hear that Dr. Rowe is at present connected with SRI. Kindly extend to him my greetings.

Concerning your program of acquisitions of current material, I shall be delighted to assist you in making the Hoover Library an important center of documentation concerning modern China. I trust that you already have good agents in Hong Kong and Formosa and you can count on them for the regular supply of current material. I would like to suggest that you try every means to build up:

1.A complete collection of telephone directories of all cities both in Communist and China; from which a great deal of information can be obtained.

2.A collection of photographs of all sorts showing the life in modern China, to be supplemented by the cuttings of illustrations from newspapers and magazines. Three copies of illustrated news should be subscribed for this purpose. Such a collection of pictorial material would be of immense value to research scholars.

Concerning Mr. Ting, I really feel that it would be a great pity if we lose him. He is a good cataloguer in every way and is a devoted and hard-working librarian. In other words, he takes more pleasure in serving others than in engaging research himself. I can assure you that he would be the right person you are looking for. The reason why you have not heard from the people in London is probably due to the fact they are now on vacation during the summer.

Under separate cover, I am mailing you a number of Chinese current periodicals. I am sure that you may have them already, but it is always useful to have extra copies especially when you want to cut down the illustrations for the purposes set forth above.

With best wishes for your continued success,

Yours sincerely,

(Payne's Mao Tse-tung was one of 40 “most outstanding books of 1950” selected by the American Library Association. What will old Dr. Brown of the ALA think of it!),是有意用气力写的,意在惩罚这种轻薄妄人。

Weldon B. Gibson

August 8, 1951

Dear Dr. Yuan:

Mrs. Wright has turned over to us the correspondence on your ex-colleague, Mr. Joseph C. Ting, who is now at the University of London. It is our understanding that Mr. Ting might be available for employment at the end of September. We wonder if you could give us some help in regard to the possible employment of Mr. Ting at Stanford Research Institute. We are therefore furnishing you with answers to some of the questions in your letter of June 18 to Mrs. Wright. We would appreciate your reactions to our proposals, and ask that you do not, as yet, contact Mr. Ting until we have had an opportunity to weigh your answers.

We are prepared to offer Mr. Ting a position of “Senior Bibliographer-Chinese Literature”. The salary for this classification would start at $300.00 per month, subject to the usual deductions for Social Security and income taxes. Work week, vacation allowances, sick leave and holidays are as described in our letter to you dated July 16, 1951.

We cannot, under our contract, provide Mr. Ting with transportation from London to Palo Alto. We are prepared to furnish him with transportation funds equal to the cost of a one-way air fare from New York to San Francisco, plus incidental travel expenses and funds for transportation of personal effect amounting to $300.00. This amount may be spent at his discretion(expecting of course that he would arrive at Palo Alto at a date we would agree upon)and would pay the greater portion of his travel expense, assuming a tourist class ship passage and rail transportation from New York to Palo Alto.

We would like very much to have Mr. Ting with us, and I imagine that you would enjoy working with him again. Please let us know how you feel about these proposals as quickly as possible, since, if your reaction is favorable, we will have many details to work out if we are to get Mr. Ting here this fall.

Very truly yours,

Quarterly Journal of the Taiwan Museum, Published by the Taiwan Museum, Taipei, Taiwan颇有价值,各国交换甚多;又新出Newsdom半月刊,则报道内幕消息。

George Boas

August 28, 1951

Dear Dr. Yuan:

The recent charges against our colleague, Owen Lattimore, include that of not being a reputable scholar. It is admitted that he is a clever and able journalist, but since he has no university degree and no title of “Professor”, he is accused of occupying a position on the Faculty under false pretenses.

As a friend of Lattimore's, I believe that it is important to vindicate his reputation and that vindication can come only from those of his colleagues who occupy chairs of Far Eastern thought, language, culture, history, and the like. Would you be kind enough to send me by air-mail your opinion of Lattimore's professional ability, with permission to quote your opinion over your signature? My purpose is to gather such opinion in one memorandum for him to use in any way he sees fit. If you do not wish certain parts of your reply to be quoted, kindly indicate such parts. It is understood that Lattimore will, if he uses your statement, present it either to the investigating committee of Congress or to the press or to both.

May I add that this invitation was initiated by me personally and that I have not been prompted to issue it by anyone in the administration of the Johns Hopkins University.

December 7, 1951

Dear Dr. Yuan:

Thank you very much for your letter of November 27, together with the material in Mongolia, which has arrived safely. We are starting to work on it here.

Of course, I shall respect your confidence. I appreciate very much the valuable work you have done in gathering this material.

Under separate cover, I am sending you a copy of the Chang Chih-yi bibliography on Mongolia. Unfortunately, this work was completed when I was under very heavy pressure, so that I could not give it a final editing, with the result that there are a good many misprints and mistakes in Romanization.

With all good wishes.

Yours very sincerely,

Owen Lattimore

〔University of Chicago Library, Yuan T'ung-li Papers, Box 6〕
